The pilots were forced to fly in a figure eight motion to burn off fuel. Because of this plane's design, it couldn't dump fuel so they were made to fly for over two hours before finally attempting to land. There were three main reasons for this. Firstly, to reduce the weight of the plane so that on landing, the landing gear won't instantly snap in two, secondly, to keep the remaining fuel at the tanks in the back of the plane so the weight of the rear is going to help the pilots keep the nose of the plane off the ground for as long as possible and thirdly, to prevent fire. The less fuel, the less chance of fire.
