Chapter 1 - The biggest mistake

Ashie's writing:

"Hey Ger, do you know where Chase is?"

"Nah sorry." Hailey sighed and kept on walking. "Oh Hailey! Wait! I think he said something about English homework...."

"Ok thanks!" Hailey picked up the pace and made her towards their English class. When she walked in, it took her a while to register what she saw. Chase was leaned up against the wall with Amber holding him there, so he couldn't move. His lips were on Amber's, one hand was on her bum and another had just gone up her shirt. Her heart stopped. Hailey could feel tears forming in her eyes, her first instinct was to say something but it looked like Chase was enjoying it, she couldn't take it anymore. Blinded with tears, she ran.

"Hailey!" Chase's voice called out from behind her.

"What do you want Chase!?" Hailey said as she turned around reluctantly. She really didn't feel like talking to him at the moment but she knew she would have to so she may as well get it over and done with.

"I can explain..."

What is there to explain Chase!? I saw all I needed to see!" Hailey yelled, about to walk off again when Chase grabbed her hand and pulled her back.

"Baby, please try to understand. She came onto m...."

"Oh so it was all her fault! It's not like you had your hand on her bum or up her shirt!.....I thought you were different Chase, obviously.......I was wrong." Chase slapped his head down onto his hands and groaned.

"Oh baby, I'm so sorry...."

"No Chase. I don't want to hear it." Hailey said quietly and then she was gone.

The quiet words hung in the air. It was alright when she was yelling and making a big fuss, it meant she'd get over it quickly but it was when she was quiet you had to be worried. What had he done? No, he knew what he had done; he had just made the most stupid mistake of his whole entire life. He just lost his girlfriend, his first love, his soul purpose for living.

"Chase?" A meek voice broke the silence.

"Go away Amber! This is all your fault!" But it wasn't, it was all his fault. He was to blame. Minutes later he found himself behind the school, leaning against the hard brick wall. He slid down to the ground and looked down into his palm. A single tear hit the silver necklace.

Hailey walked down the corridor as normally as possible but it must've been pretty fast because she reached the door quicker than normal. She let the door slam behind her as she stomped down the steps and through the school carpark. Suddenly it was there, the familiar car that she had ridden in twice a day to and from school. By habit she had headed for the same spot that he parked in everyday but this time it was different. She didn't want to be near anything that reminded her of that guy who had once seemed so perfect, that guy who had broken her heart when he had promised he wouldn't and the guy who had told her that she was his only one. With clenched fists and broken dreams, an idea entered Hailey's head. She knew that the perfect way to teach that jerk a lesson was to hit him where it hurts and damage the very thing he treasured most. With a smile on her face, Hailey headed for the PE department and searched through all the equipment until she found what she was looking for; a baseball bat. While running back to Chase's car she did a quick scan of the carpark to check that no one was watching. No one was and now was the time to do it. As she picked up the bat and swung at the driver's window her smile grew but it quickly disappeared when his face came rushing back into her head. Glass flew, tears fell and many screams escaped from her mouth. The car was slowly beginning to look a lot like Hailey's heart; crushed, ruined and unable to function. In the midst of the car alarm and the impact from the baseball bat she heard a door slam. That's when Hailey ran. She vaguely remembered throwing the bat to the side and then rushing to the one place where she knew no one would find her, the library. Sitting in the back with her head in her hands, Hailey let the tears flow. She had thought Chase would be different. Unlike all the other guys, he had been loyal and told her he loved her everyday. He had loved her for her personality and not her body. He had made her feel special. Now, that was all gone, along with her ability to ever love again.

"Hailey? Is that you?"

"What do you want?!" She said without looking up.

"Are you alright?" She raised her head and saw Sam Hamilton. He was a new guy so Hailey didn't know much about him but she bet he would do anything to up his status in the school which meant telling everyone that the most popular girl in school was a cry-baby.

"I'm fine." She said flatly. He sat down beside her and Hailey sighed. Couldn't he just ignore her like everyone else?

"You don't sound fine to me...."

"What's it to you!?" Hailey snapped loudly.

"You're crying and I want to try and make you feel better." Sam said, obviously not fazed by her bluntness.

"Why are you being nice to me? You don't even know me."

"Why do I have to know you to be nice to you?" His reply shocked Hailey. He was not like other guys, he was like how Chase was, or had been. Most guys would've walked off, not caring, by now and that was only if they wanted to talk to her at all. Hailey just shrugged and looked away.

"You don't have to tell me what's wrong if you don't want to but I just want to make sure you're alright." He said kindly.

"I'll get over it." Hailey muttered under her breath and walked off.

Chase walked into math a bit late as he had had to go to the bathroom first to make sure it didn't look like he had been crying. Chase slid into a seat and looked across the aisle at Hailey. He then got out a pen and a piece of paper and wrote Hailey a note.

Baby, I'm so sorry. I'll make it up to you. Meet me at the front gate after school?

Love you

He nervously watched Hailey read it and when Hailey turned the piece of paper over and wrote something on the back, he gained hope. But the hope was quickly crushed as he read the words on the paper.

I'm not your baby.

Chase froze, that was it, she was gone. Just like that.

He had to get Hailey back; he was not going to give up so easily. He loved her and he knew she was the right one for him. He would make her his baby again and this time it would be forever. That was at least what he thought until he saw his car. The car he had saved up for for so long, was now unrecognisable. He made a call to his dad and asked to be picked up, when his dad asked what happened to his car Chase told him some vandals had done it as a prank. However chase knew exactly who had done it from the initials carved into the seat and he knew that he got what he deserved.
