ACT I, SCENE V: AT THE BALL

GAVOTTE

(The castle ballroom is packed with young women. Each girl dances with the prince one at a time and is passed on to another partner. MADAME is standing alongside CHARLOTTE and GABRIELLE.)

CHARLOTTE: Oh, at this rate, we'll never get to dance with the prince!

MADAME: Yes, well I'll just see if I can change that.

(MADAME approaches LIONEL.)

MADAME: Excuse me.

LIONEL: Yes, what is it now, madam?

MADAME: Well, you see, your grace, my two lovely daughters-

LIONEL: As I've said time and time again, every young lady will have her moment with the prince in time. You'll just have to be patient.

MADAME: I see... Well, there is one more thing that I was wondering.

LIONEL: yes?

MADAME: Just who is going to have the honor of dancing with you?

LIONEL: Madam,-

MADAME: Now, now, there's no reason to be coy! We both know that you too felt that special something between us.

LIONEL: You know, madam, a part of me wishes there were something between us.

MADAME: Oh, really?

LIONEL: Yes, a continent would do nicely.

(MADAME scoffs and returns to the line. LIONEL approaches TOPHER and pulls him aside.)

LIONEL: well...?

TOPHER: I can't help it. None of these girls are the one! Trust me. I'll know when I see her.

(LIONEL leaves the prince and walks through the crowd to KING MAXIMILIAN.)

KING MAXIMILIAN: Well?...

LIONEL: Well...

KING MAXIMILIAN: Has he found one yet?!

LIONEL: Not yet, your majesty... But he will before the night is over! I can feel if in my bones!

KING MAXIMILIAN: you'll feel it in your bones if he doesn't!

(CHARLOTTE is lead to TOPHER.)

CHARLOTTE: Ships that pass in the night,

and speak each other in passing, only a signal shown,

and a distant voice in the darkness;

So on the ocean of life,-

TOPHER: Pardon?

CHARLOTTE: ships that pass in the night, that's us! On the ocean of life! It's poetry!

TOPHER: ... I think that's enough...
