Amelia

Currently seated on the black leather couch in Alec's office, I leaned against the armrest, reading the reports of the other shadowhunters. It was the least I could do while Alec was busy with more important stuff like the Downworld cabinet meetings.

"The Clave is very impressed with your progress. They think you're ready for your first mission." Alec told the youngest Lightwood. He was obviously proud, and so was I. Being close with Jace, Izzy and Alec made me close with Max too. "What do you think?"

"I've been ready since the day I got here." Max said with enthusiasm.

"Well then, you better get your butt over to training. You know how much our sister hates tardiness." Alec said. Without looking up, I uttered a "bye, Max."

"Any sign of Jonathan?" Alec suddenly asked.

Another voice replied, and I realized it was Jace. "No. We tracked the box itself, But it was a deadend."

I set the iPad down. "I'm done with the reports. They're all efficient. You can double-check, if you want." I shrugged.

"Hey, Ames."

"Jace. Clary." I nodded in acknowledgement.

Alec frowned. "Valentine sent Duncan to steal a pair of baby booties?"

His parabatai shrugged. "Someone did. Someone who wanted to circumvent us from tracking Jonathan. And now we have no leads on either of them. We've got nothing."

Alec looked defeated as he sat down beside me. "Actually, we have less than nothing." He corrected depressingly. "There's something you should know. The Clave doesn't have the Soul Sword. They never did."

"So the Clave has been lying this entire time? Wouldn't be the first time." Jace huffed.

He lost faith in the Clave, and I can't say I haven't as well.

"The Clave is trying to prevent an uprising." Alec said. "If the Downworld finds out that we don't have the Soul Sword, there would be total chaos."

"But the sword's been deactivated. It can't be used on Downworlders." Clary stated confused.

I tsked. "Even if the sword's deactivated, he can still use it. It's still a Mortal Instrument, after all."

Jace nodded. "If you combine it with the other two Mortal Instruments: the cup and the mirror, he could use it to raise the Angel Raziel."

"I thought that was just a legend." Clary said.

Alec shrugged. "All the legends are true."

"The Angel will grant him one wish." Jace said. "Anything he wants."

Clary's eyes widened in fear, not for us, but for the Downworlders. "The end of the Downworld as we speak."

I actually wondered if my mother and father knew about the Soul Sword too. I'm sure they, along with Lydia, knew, given their rankings within the Clave.

But of course, why would they blab to me about something so important and deadly?

They wouldn't.
