Micah set the last case of product back on the storage shelves in the shop. He marked it with a pen and shucked off his gloves as he strolled out to the aisles of Beaver's Market. "I think that's it, Jason," he said. "So I'll see you in two days."
"Okay, yeah," Jason stepped out of his office. "That Liz lady was in here last night before we closed."
Micah rolled his eyes. "Of course she was."
Jason snorted. "Same as the last time, just a lot of questions about you and Jeff, though."
That made Micah freeze slightly, but he forced himself to keep acting normally. "Oh yeah? Like what?"
"I don't know. She kept asking if I knew about Jeff dating anyone, but I don't think he has since high school," Jason paused looking at Micah then. "She really seems to want to know something about you and Jeff."
"Weird, I guess," Micah muttered uncomfortably. Maybe he didn't mind people knowing, but Jason was his boss, and he didn't know Jason that well as a person to know what he would think. However, it didn't seem Jason was all that stupid.
"I mean its weird that you and Jeff are friends, isn't it?" Jason commented. "You two never really crossed in high school."
"Well we've outgrown that. We're adults now. We can put aside our differences and be friends," Micah said.
"True." Jason stroked his jaw then, though he didn't have any facial hair. "Just she made it seem like you spend a lot of time at his house."
"He has custody of my brother," Micah reminded him. "Are you trying to get at something?" He didn't do well with Jason trying to beat around the bush like he was.
"I guess you two seem awful close, is all," Jason still spoke carefully, though he was watching Micah's every move.
Micah tried not to tense. "Did you say anything like that to her?"
"No, I don't tell her shit other than that you're a good worker and a good guy," Jason puffed up defensively. "And it's not my place to go telling her about yours or Jeff's personal life, at least, nothing that isn't common knowledge."
Micah stared at him. "Well we're friends," Micah grumbled. "And I've got to get going. I'm starving. I might pick up a few things here first." He wish he didn't have to—now he only wanted to get away from Jason's questions. But he had promised to get something to go alongside the roast that Jeff had slow cooking, and Sasha wanted mushrooms.
Micah bought what he needed quickly and went out to his bike behind the store. He had intended on another stop, but now he wasn't so sure. Jason wasn't suspicious, and Micah couldn't be sure what eyes and ears were around that might talk to Liz. It wouldn't help to be buying condoms where someone could go blabbing their mouth.
Micah sighed. He really didn't want to have to drive out of his way to get something like that, just out of fear. He swore under his breath and stopped by a different store to get them. It wasn't exactly something Beaver's Market carried, not that he would have bought them there, especially now.
He was at least able to use the self-checkout, even if shopping at the chain grocery store irked him. It couldn't be helped here. He wrapped a plastic bag around it and put it in the saddlebag opposite of what he had bought at the end of his shift.
He stopped at home to grab a few more changes of clothes since he hadn't been home in the last three days. It was just easier to be at Jeff's—Sasha was there, and Micah knew he would end up there anyways. He wondered if anyone had also noticed that. He would have to ask Jeff about it—though it wasn't the conversation he wanted to have with Jeff.
