The door of the cabinet slowly creaked open...
And out stepped Bellatrix Lestrange.
Emma's jaw dropped, her eyes nearly bugging out of her head. What on earth was she doing here? She was the one who had killed Sirius...she was a Death Eater. Why was she in Hogwarts?
A handful of other Death Eaters followed her. Emma only recognized one other; Fenrir Greyback. That definitely wasn't a good sign.
Emma was growing more confused by the second, question after question flitting through her mind, quickly moving aside for the next to dart through, leaving her mind spinning. Why were they here? Had Draco had something to do with it? Why would Draco have something to do with it? Why had they come through the cabinet that she and Draco had fixed? What were they planning to do in Hogwarts?
Emma slightly shifted one of her hands that was on the ground, but it nudged something in the pile in front of her. A single coin dropped to the hard stone floor, making a cling sound that echoed deafeningly through the silent room. Emma's heart was practically beating out of her chest as she saw Bellatrix's head whip around, a suspicious look on her face.
"Did you hear that?" Bellatrix breathed, her voice making an unpleasant shiver run down Emma's spine.
"Of course we did." one of the Death Eaters grumbled. "But I doubt it's anything to worry about. Look at all this junk; there's no way those stacks are sturdy. Things are going to fall from time to time. I'm sure it doesn't mean anything."
Not looking completely convinced, Bellatrix nodded. "Alright. Let's move. Places to go, people to see." At this, a demented smirk crossed her face. Emma's blood boiled; it was the same smirk she wore after killing Sirius.
They moved out of sight, but Emma didn't breath until she heard the door shut. She finally let out a sigh of relief. That was cl-
"Well, would you look at we have here." Bellatrix's voice hissed in Emma's ear, successfully making her heart stop. A hand grabbed her hair and yanked her up off of the ground, and she shrieked in pain and fear. "You know," Bellatrix said thoughtfully as Emma felt the cold blade of a knife press against her neck, "I really hate spies."
Emma could only wimper. She had never been so afraid in her life. What on earth was happening?
"Come on deary, we wouldn't want to miss the show!" Bellatrix cackled, dragging Emma out of the Room of Requirement.
As they were walking, Emma gulped, finally working up the courage to say something. "I didn't know you were so primitive, Bellatrix. Why use a knife when you have a wand?" she asked, rather proud when her voice barely shook.
Bellatrix laughed, an awful, bone-chilling sound. "Oh I dunno, I like to go back to the bare essentials sometimes, you know? Makes things much more interesting, don't you think?" She laughed again, making Emma cringe from the loudness.
"Not exactly the word that came to mind." Emma muttered, earning a sharp tug on her hair. She bit down on her lip to stop any sound from escaping.
"Enough talking. I don't like the sound of your voice. I find it annoying." Bellatrix announced snobbishly.
After another few moments of walking, Emma finally realized where they were going. "Why are we going to the Astronomy Tower?" she blurted.
Bellatrix gave another painful tug on Emma's hair. "I don't like it when my hostages ask questions." she growled into Emma's ear, making the hair stand up on the back of Emma's neck and all over her arms.
Hostage. The word rang through Emma's head. Is that what she was now? Bellatrix Lestrange's hostage? The thought put everything into terrifying perspective. How on earth am I going to get out of this?
Emma was starting to wish she hadn't left the common room.
They reached the base of the stairs that led up to the tower, and Bellatrix roughly pushed Emma up them ahead of her. Emma was trying to think of all the different scenes that might greet her when she reached the top of the stairs.
She was not prepared for what she saw.
Albus was leaning against the railing of the tower, looking incredibly weak. He hadn't looked like that at breakfast, had he? It scared her; she had never seen him look more fragile.
She continued to scan the room, and her stomach quickly plummeted to her toes as her eyes fell on a familiar blond head facing Albus.
What was he doing?!
Draco's hand was shakily pointing his wand at weakened Albus, and the other Death Eaters were watching on expectantly. Expecting what?
She saw acute sadness flash across Albus' face, and it broke her heart. Why did he look like that? What was happening? Probably seeing the change in Albus' face, Draco turned around. A look of intense pain and regret lit his eyes, and he almost lowered his wand. Almost.
"Don't mind the new arrival, Draco." Bellatrix sneered, pressing the knife a little firmer against Emma's neck. She bit back a whimper, but she could tell she wasn't fooling Draco. He knew she was in pain, and he looked extremely guilty. But why? Emma thought in frustration. She hated being so confused.
"Come on Draco, dear. You've come this far. Finish it!" Bellatrix shrieked.
"Finish what?" Emma asked, not bothering to contain the waver in her voice. "Draco, what's going on?"
"Oh, well isn't this an interesting turn of events." Bellatrix cackled. "Draco, do you know her?"
Draco looked away from Albus, nodding at Bellatrix. Emma took the opportunity to look at Albus. He was looking straight at her.
I love you he mouthed.
Emma eyes widened. Why was he saying this now? I love you too she mouthed back, and he seemed to relax a little bit.
"Yes, Aunt Bellatrix." Draco muttered, "I know her."
Emma's head whipped over to Draco. "Aunt?" she asked, shocked.
He wouldn't look at her. "Yeah." he mumbled. He finally looked up, meeting her eyes, and he must have seen the shock and anger on Emma's face, because he jumped to defend himself. "Well, I didn't really see it necessary to go over my family tree with you." he snapped.
"Draco, stop stalling." Bellatrix growled. "Hurry up and finish what you started."
"He doesn't have the guts. Just like his father." Greyback sneered.
Draco's jaw clenched, a muscle in his cheek ticking like it did when he was angry. He faced Albus again, raising his wand. There were several moments of tense silence. Emma could practically taste the tension in the air. I still don't know what's happening. she though grumpily.
Draco's wand lowered just a bit. Whatever he's supposed to do, he's not gonna do it. she thought immediately. He's lowering his wand. He won't do it.
Just then, someone burst in. Everyone turned to look at the new arrival, including Draco.
"Severus!" Emma blurted without thinking, which earned her a sharp tug on her hair and the blade pressed harder against her neck. She didn't care, though. Severus was here. He would put a stop to all this nonsense. He would. She trusted him.
Severus looked at her, but instead of the soft, caring look that was usually in his eyes when he looked at her, they looked hard and unreadable.
Draco stepped back, and Severus stepped forward, facing Albus.
"Severus." Albus' voice sounded so weak and fragile. "Severus, please." he said simply.
There was no trace of softness, compassion, or yielding in Severus' eyes as he raised his wand. Bellatrix tensed in anticipation behind Emma.
Emma had a terrible feeling in her stomach. She wanted to hide her face, look away from the awful scene, but she couldn't look away.
She wished she had.
Severus' voice rang throughout the silent tower:
