Q. WHAT IS CELLULITE?
A. Cellulite is more common in women than men because the fibrous bands of their connective tissue don't cross over as much to provide support under the skin. Fat (in any quantity) then bulges out from this connective tissue - which is why you can be slim and still have cellulite.
Q. WHAT MAKES YOU MORE AT RISK OF CELLULITE?
A. Excess weight won't help - the more fat that bulges through the sub-dermal structures, the more noticeable it will be. A healthy diet plus exercise will help firm up the skin around that area. You might think, when it comes to how to get rid of cellulite, that getting a tan will help your legs look nicer, but it won't. Losing the dermis means the skin is looser and will exacerbate the appearance.
Q. WILL RUBBING CAFETIERE DREGS ON MY THIGHS GET RID OF CELLULITE?
A. Methylxanthines (e.g. caffeine and aminophylline and theophylline) work in theory by stimulating lipolysis. There have been studies that show some improvement of topical applications applied twice a day for six weeks, but there is no evidence of clinically significant improvement. Interestingly, there is some evidence for applying a topical retinoid as it helps to improve the skin elasticity and hence the overall appearance.
Q. ARE THERE ANY CELLULITE EXERCISES I CAN DO?
A. Exercise will help with fat loss and firm underlying muscles, which will help to improve the appearance. Also, make sure you foam roll in your workouts for extra cellulite-crushing power.
Q. I HEARD MASSAGING CAN CURE CELLULITE - IS THAT TRUE?
A. While there's no such thing as a cure, I think there is value on massaging skin to help the microcirculation and to stimulate lymph flow. Cellulite treatments that include massage, base their techniques and theories on the concept that vigorous massage helps to increase blood circulation, reducing excessive amounts of fluid in areas that contain cellulite.
