“I’m sorry about Noah.” Cameron repeated for like the ten thousandth time.
“I’m totally over it Cam. Stop apologizing.”
“I just feel bad, that’s all.”
“Why would you feel bad?”
“Because Noah’s the reason you don’t date and don’t trust guys anymore.”
“What does that have to do with you?”
“I brought you to his house.”
“Yeah, but you didn’t know about me and him.”
“I still blame myself.” he said.
“Do you want to know what I think, Cam?”
“I think you could be the reason I start trusting guys again.”
“Really?” he asked.
“You actually care about me. You showed me that guys can be caring too. And for some reason, I feel like I can trust you.”
“Well, I’m happy to hear that.” he hugged me.
I spent the rest of the afternoon hanging out with Cameron.
At seven, I called Alexa to invite her over and Cameron called Chris. I was very excited about having a sleep-over with someone other than just Alexa. Cameron had suggested inviting them over to set them up. Even if it didn’t work out, at least we’d make friends out of it. Chris and Alexa arrived at the same time about ten minutes later.
“Hi, I’m Chris.” Chris said to Alexa and I.
“I’m Alexa.” she told the boys.
“Nice to meet you, Alexa. I’m Cameron but call me Cam.”
“And I’m Bridget.” I said barely above a whisper.
“Don’t be shy.” Cameron told me. “Chris doesn’t bite.”
I blushed and everyone laughed.
“What do you guys want to do?” Chris asked.
“Let’s play 21 questions but a bit modified. We all take turns asking a question to the person of our choice. It’ll help us get to know each other.” Alexa suggested.
Everyone agreed so we all sat in a circle on Cameron’s bed.
“So, if you get asked a question, it’s your turn to ask. If you chicken out and don’t answer the question, you don’t get to ask a question. You can only chicken out three times.” Alexa explained. “Does everyone understand?”
“Yes!” we all said.
With that, the game started.
Cameron started. “Alexa, are you single?”
“Yes, I am.” she answered. “Okay, Chris, how old are you?”
“I’m 18.” Chris answered. “Bridget, are you single?”
“Yeah, I’ve been single for two years.” I said. “Cam, how did you know I’d been shot?” I asked.
“I was going to see the guys and when I got there, you’d just been shot. You just got lucky.” he explained.
“You guys were meant to be!” Alexa shrieked.
“Shut up Lex!” I blushed.
“My turn!” Cameron announced. “Alexa, since when are you and Bridget best friends?”
“Wow! Friends for life!” Chris joked.
“Yep.” Alexa said. “Bri, would you consider starting to date again?”
“Like now or in the future?” I questioned.
“Now.” she said.
“I don’t know. Depends on the guy I think. I’m not totally against it like before but I’m still scared.” I said honestly.
“That’s good. You’re making progress.” Alexa said.
“Umm, Chris, why were you guys playing with guns that day?” I asked.
“We were drunk and weren’t thinking. Joe said he’d shoot if he heard another bird. And, well, you just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. I’m really sorry Bridget.” Chris said.
“It’s okay, I’m fine now. I just wanted to know.” I said to him.
“I have a question for Alexa.” Chris said. “Have you ever had your heart broken?”
“I’ve been sad over a break up before but I’ve never had an actual heart break.” she explained. “Bri, this question is for you. What’s the name of the guy who broke your heart?”
“Umm –” I started.
“Don’t tell me I already know because I don’t. The only thing you’ve told me is that the guy is a jerk. I don’t even know what happened between you two. You dated him the year I went to California.” Alexa stated.
“I guess I should tell you. You’re my best friend and all. So, uh, his name is Noah. Noah Green.”
“Wait, you dated Noah?” Chris asked.
“Yeah, two years ago. He’s the reason I gave up on guys.” I explained to him.
“Cam, why aren’t you more surprised that she went out with Noah?” Chris continued to question.
“I knew already.” Cameron answered.
“What? How’d you know?”
Cameron looked at me for approval. I nodded.
“This morning I brought Bridget to his house so she could meet my best friend.” he explained. “I didn’t tell her his name because I figured she didn’t know him. When Noah answered the door, Bridget ran off. I found her crying on a swing at the park and she explained to me what had happened between the two of them.”
“Before you say anything Lex, yes I’ll tell you what happened.” I said quickly.
I told the whole story to Alexa and Chris and ended up crying again. I don’t even know why I still cry over Noah. The whole thing happened two years ago. I know I don’t love him anymore. Heck, I probably don’t even like him. But for some reason, it still hurts to think that he lied to me like that.
“Come here Bridge.” Cameron said his arms open wide.
Being in Cameron’s arms made me feel better instantly. I felt safe in his arms; like nothing could hurt me when I was with him.
We decided to watch a horror movie. Or should I say they decided.
“You should sit beside me. I’ll save you again.” Cameron smirked.
I rolled my eyes but still took his advice. I know I’d end up there at some point anyway. Cameron put his arm around me and I placed my head on his shoulder. I was ready for the film to start.
