We were arguing about Kahiki. I don't know why my dad thought that it would be a good idea to show up with him. Leila and I were so used to him never being around and it always being us two. It was a big surprise when our dad showed up at the front door, sober. It was an even bigger surprise when he dropped Kahiki off in his old room.
Leila was still recovering from the slap. Her cheek was red and had a small scratch on it. We were getting supper ready when our dad stumbled in with Kahiki. There wasn't a word exchanged, we just stared at our dad.
We haven't seen our dad in person for ages. We might catch a glimpse of him leaving early in the morning for work or coming home really late. I hadn't seen him up close for a good year. He has greying hair and a sad goatee. It pained me that he would take care of his son who abandoned us and he wouldn't even say a hello to his daughters.
Our dad was trying to convince us that it would be a good idea to take care of Kahiki. We obviously shot that idea down right away. I knew that there was no chance of either of us taking care of that jerk.
"If you're going to leave, you girls can leave right now." His words stunned us.
"Fine then." Leila said while grabbing my wrist and walking to my bedroom. Her grip surprised me, I think I might have a bruise later.
I was stunned. I didn't know what to say.
"Grab a bag and throw a day's worth of stuff." Leila said while sitting down on my bed.
I quickly went through my closet and bathroom, grabbing enough stuff for a day. My small duffle was full. We walked over to Leila's room and she did the same. Neither of us wanted to talk much.
We stormed past my dad who was sitting at the kitchen table with his hands covering his face. Leila grabbed her computer and we left. My Jeep was the only car sitting in the driveway. I didn't bother wondering how they got here.
I had a vague idea of where we would go. I wasn't sure if he'd appreciate us appearing at six thirty but it was worth a try. I only had to drive around the corner to get to Keoki's house. He has a roommate but he rarely comes home since he also has a place on another island.
"Keoki?" I sang out while knocking on the door.
He unlocked the door and waved us in. He was only wearing sweatpants and I could sense Leila drooling over him.
His house was much small than ours but it was cozy. Keoki sat down on the couch and turned on the TV.
"Want to explain why two fine girls show up on my doorstep with duffel bags?" He asked while eyeing the TV.
I plopped down on the couch beside him, throwing my duffel on the ground. Leila perched on a chair beside the couch.
"Dad brought Kahiki home." I said, my voice sounding like a robot.
"Oh shit." Keoki knew that it wasn't good, especially when we show up with duffels.
"Feel free to make yourself at home. I've got food somewhere around here." He said while putting his arms up on the back of the couch.
"Oh, man, you stink!" I cried while fanning the stink away from me.
"Well that's what you get when you work out. I have to keep this gorgeous body in shape!" He said arrogantly while giving me a lopsided smile.
"Ugh! Do you have any drinks?" I asked. I could really go for a cooler or something.
"I've got Sprite, Coke, Pepsi, Ice Tea and Orange Juice." Keoki listed while intently watching a football game. I looked at him.
"What? Little girls shouldn't drink!" He looked over at me.
"Fine." I called over my shoulder while walking to the kitchen.
I opened up the fridge. It wasn't very full of food. There were a couple of beers and a bunch of pop. I decided to please Keoki and take a can of Coke. When I was walking back to the living room, I saw Leila staring at Keoki. I don't think Keoki even noticed her, he was watching the football match like his life depended on it.
I sat back down beside Keoki and pulled my legs under me. Cracking open my Coke seemed to get him out of his trance.
"See? You're a good girl." Keoki said while taking the can out of my hand and taking a gulp.
"Hey! That was like half the can! I actually want to drink some!" I scrambled over him, trying to get it back from his outstretched arm.
"I was just checking to make sure you didn't add any alcohol!" He winked at me. Of course he was doing that. He even saw me open it!
I was pretty much sitting on Keoki and that was when he finally gave me back my half-empty Coke. Once I had my can back, I tried to sit back on the couch but Keoki wrapped his arms around my waist making it impossible.
"Keoki let me go." I pleaded. This was kind of awkward.
I put my Coke down on the coffee table and tried to pry Keoki's arms off of me. I desperately looked over at Leila. It didn't look like she would be helping me anytime soon; she was taking pictures of us.
"Leila!" I exclaimed.
"What?" She asked innocently.
"Help me, please!" I said while prying at Keoki's fingers.
Leila just relaxed into the chair and continued to take photos.
After ten minutes, I gave up. There was no use of trying to get off. I took a sip of my Coke and stared at the TV. Keoki took my Coke again. I could hear him gulping it down.
"Thanks, babe." He muttered into my shoulder.
I ignored him. Since my Coke was empty, I put it back on the cluttered table and watched the TV.
"This is so boring!" Leila moaned.
We had been watching the football match for two hours. I tried to hold back a yawn but failed. The TV remote was so close to me. Maybe if I just slowly reach out and grab it, Keoki won't notice. I don't even know how he can see the TV since I was still sitting on him.
It was almost nine thirty and I was ready to sleep. From the looks of it, Keoki and Leila were too. Leila had her eyes closed while still holding her phone. I could feel my eyelids droop down. Keoki's head was resting against my back and I could hear his steady breathing.
I'll just rest my eyes for a minute. I won't fall asleep. It's too early to sleep. My head was resting against Keoki's shoulder. This is comfy, maybe if I just sleep for five minutes. That sounds good. The sound of the TV faded away.
Sorry that this chapter isn't very long. I thought that it'd be nice to show the relationship of Keoki and Akalei and then their dad and the girls. What do you guys think of Keoki? Any feedback?
