I suppose I should apologise in advance for calling conspiracists stupid. The problem is that they are stupid, and I cannot present this material without being disparaging about them. If you take offence easily, stop reading now!
It is always very difficult to debunk conspiracy theories because the claims made by the conspiracists need no justification at all and are often based on an actual ignorance of the science. Debunking their claims requires an understanding of basic scientific procedure at the very least, the exact knowledge they lack, and this, in turn, causes an irrational refusal to believe what they are being told. They are often extremely well informed, but also completely wrong. The cartoon sums it up perfectly.
There are also conspiracy theories which are plainly ridiculous like the people who suddenly decided there were another three secret Apollo missions during which contact with aliens occurred including visiting a mile-long alien spacecraft on the moon.
That entire conspiracy theory can be disposed of by ANY intelligent person giving it a few seconds thought. How?
Simple. The Saturn V Apollo missions to the moon needed the rocket to be assembled inside the biggest building in the world, with components manufactured by tens of thousands of employees of Lockheed, North American Aviation, Grumman, Martin and others. Once it is assembled it has to be transported at 1mph to a launch pad. The launch of a Saturn V cannot be hidden. Where do they think those extra Saturn V boosters were launched from? Tracy Island? You can't just magic them into position. There is only one building on Earth where they can be assembled, the vertical assembly building in Florida, and there is no way you launch from there in secret. Such conspiracies are too stupid to take seriously, yet some people do and it beggars belief that others believe them.
The frustration is that when you spend time explaining why the moon landings were real to a moon-landing denier, they then turn around and quote that three more secret moon-landings took place. SCREEEEEEAAAAAMMMMMMM!
It is not possible to show someone who believes that black is white, that they are, in fact wrong. This entire essay is, therefore, a total waste of time if you happen to be one of the stupid, ignorant moon-deniers. It will not convince you because you are impossible to reason with. For others, well, I hope you find it interesting and that it will help you shut-up the naysayers when you encounter them.
