A/N: This is an extremely short, filler chapter. I needed something to pave the way for the ending of the story.
Anyways, here you go!
The water rises and bubbles, as if the ocean were turning into a massive hot tub. Curiously, the bubbles began to form a perfect circle in the water. A dome of fog settles over the bubbling circle of water, hazy, yet clear enough to see that the figure of a man is standing inside of it. Yes, the man is standing as if walking on concrete. The ocean turns glassy, almost like a pond. No waves were seen, at all. In fact, this scene is a little eerie, looking like it came out of a horror novel. Alyssa almost expected a sea monster to jump out of the water in the distance.
Morgan turns to Alyssa, grabbing her shoulders urgently and shaking her out of her daydream.. “Alyssa, listen to me. Neptune wants you to talk to him. I don’t know how he will react to you, but his temper is, well, legendary as you already know.” Her eyes are bright with urgency and a pit of fear forms in Alyssa’s stomach. Romen snorts his agreement, as if saying “What else is new?” His hands are clenched at his sides.
“I can’t believe he actually came. I mean, what if he hurts her, or what if he decides to just kill her to save himself the trouble of talking.”
Morgan gasps, and if looks could kill, Romen would be lying cold on the sand. “Romen, don’t talk like that…she’ll be fine.” Morgan averts her attention back to Alyssa. “You’ll be fine.”
“I’ll be fine as long as you’re there with me.” Alyssa answers quickly, trying to reassure not only her friend but herself. The idea of talking to the so called ‘king of the sea’ caused goosebumps to crawl up her arm. But she doesn’t mention that to her friends.
Romen speaks up, a hint of annoyance in his voice. “He wants to speak with you Alyssa, alone.”
Now Alyssa’s pit of fear has grown into a beach ball. All this time she has imagined Neptune as a malevolent old ruler, who only wants to steal, kill, and destroy. Facing him would be the most terrifying experience of her life. But hadn’t she called Neptune here in the first place? Whether she liked it or not, she had to go in there alone.
She turns to face the sea, the beach ball in her stomach growing larger, threatening to come up her throat.
“Alright. I’ll do it.”
She makes a move to step into the glassy ghost-like ocean when someone grabs her hand.
“Alyssa wait.” Romen breathes before twisting her around and pulling her into a hug. At first, she stiffens from the surprise, but then instantly relaxes into the hug. Tears threaten to spill over as the realization of the situation hits her full on. Romen takes one hand and lifts up her chin.
“You’ll be fine. I promise you.” His bright blue eyes pierce into hers, and his wispy blonde hair blows lightly in the breeze. With the closeness of them, she can feel the heat radiating off of his muscles. He clenches his jaw and moves a piece of her wild brown hair away from her face.
“I promise.” He whispers one more time before softly brushing his lips across hers. No, it wasn’t a passionate, romantic kiss that heats up the entire beach. It was a soft brush, like butterfly wings on skin. But in that soft kiss, Alyssa realized something. She was falling, head over tail, for Romen, a guy she’d met only a few weeks before. A tear slips down her cheek and a smile tugs at her lips.
“I’ll be back before you know it.”
“Alrighty love birds, this is all fine and dandy but Neptune is probably losing patience right about now. You’ll be able to make out when you get back.”
Morgan decides to chime in and Alyssa almost feels Morgan rolling her eyes and crossing her arms in annoyance as she usually does. She smiles into Romen’s chest.
Romen’s body shakes with laughter and he hugs her tightly one last time, before she lets go and begins to walk towards the water. Expecting to sink into it and turn into a mermaid, the cold icy feeling immediately made her jump. Tentatively, she steps onto the icy, solid water and walks gingerly across it to where Neptune was waiting. Just before the dome of fog, Alyssa stops to turn around. Romen and Morgan are standing on the edge of the ocean, about 30 feet away. Morgan gives her a thumbs up.
Grimacing, Alyssa steps into the fog, and braces herself.
