Chapter 12

Since my mom saw Andrew pick me up, he decided it was best if he dropped me off to. It was about five o'clock hen he left my house to go pick up Aubrey. I walked inside and sitting on the couch was my mom, watching the news.

"Hey mom." I said as I walked by her.

"Hey sweety..." her voice trailed off. "Um, honey, would you care to explain why there are burn marks in your clothes?"

'Shit,' I thought to myself. I had forgot to change out of my burnt up clothes.

"Ya see, here's the thing mom," I started, "I um, I..." then my voice trailed off as I saw what the news was playing. It was the dash cam of the cop car that was chasing those guys earlier today. My mom pauses the tv, showing right where I was talking to the cops.

"Something you'd like to explain to me?" She asked in a stern voice.

"Look mom," I hesitated, "yes, that's me, okay?"

"I knew this day would come," she mumbled to herself.

"Wait, what do you mean you knew this day would come?" I asked, highly intrigued.

"Come with me honey," she said getting up and grabbing my hand, leading me to her bedroom. I hesitantly went.

We entered her room and I stood by the door, not knowing what to really do. I was still really confused. She walked over to her closet, opened it up and flipped on the light switch. She reached above her head, on to the shelf, and brought down a dusty cardboard box.

"Here," she said. "Your father told me that I'd know the right time to give this to you. He gave it to me before that day he crashed. I feel like this is the right time. I have no idea what's inside of it, never thought to look."

On top of the box was my name, written with a sharpie who know how long ago. I started to open the box, peeling away the broken and faded tape.

"Not here," she said, "I think this is something you need to do by yourself."

"No, mom, you deserve to know about this as much as I do. I know you miss him as much as I do." I said, grabbing her shoulder and setting her and the box down on the bed. I easily pried the tape off of the box and opened it up. Inside was a bunch of papers, some folded in half and some neatly lying at the bottom. I pulled the papers out. And laying at the very bottom was a flash drive. I took it out, examined it carefully, and looked at my mom.

"Like I said, I haven't gone through any of this." She said.

I ran to my room, grabbed my laptop, and ran back to my moms bedroom. Of course, it was a regular run. I didn't want to freak my mom out just yet. I say back down on the bed, opened up my laptop, and waited for it to boot up.

"Look, honey," started my mom "I know that you have these powers now, but I don't want you to get carried away. What you did out there with those guys was reckless."

"Mom, I know it was, and I know those cops would have caught them sooner or later, but I just helped them along." I said.

"I know honey but..."

"Mom, I have always felt like there was something missing in my life, and I now know what it is. It's this! Fighting crime must be what I was meant to do. Or at least help." I told her. My computer finished booting up and before she could say anything else, I typed in my password and plugged in the flash drive . It loaded up a video, and the first thing I saw was my dads face. I heard my mom catch her breath and my chest ached for him too. I pressed play.

"So, I guess if you're watching this Tyler, it must mean that I'm gone, or I would be telling you this in person,"I saw my mom wipe a tear away and my eyes started moistening up too, "And if your mother gave you that box, it means she saw something in you that made her give you that box. I believe I know what it is. See, mine and your body, they have one gene that are exactly alike. It's called the Metagene. For some reason, you were born with the gene, but your powers never came in as a kid like mine did. But, if your mother gave you this box, that means that they finally came in! What triggered it, I don't know"

'I know, and so does mom' I thought to myself

"But, you need to be careful with how you use them," my dad continued on "because there are people that will want to get ahold of you and use you for their own evil doings." There was a loud banging on the door in the background.

"Daniels, hurry up!" Yelled a deep, gruff voice.

"I have to go now," said my dad, with a mixed look of pain and grief on his face, "but what ever you here and whatever you see, no matter what, I am still alive."
