Chapter 2

I wake up early as it's a Sunday, Gale and I's hunting day. Gale recently got a job at the coal mines which means he is working all week, except for Sunday.

I get dressed, brush my teeth and braid my hair then place a kiss on Peetas forehead before making my way downstairs where I pull on my hunting boots and my fathers hunting jacket.

I make my way out of the Victors Village, the snow crunching beneath of feet, and then duck under the fence which leads to the woods. The feeling that washes over me every time I enter the woods is almost something I cannot describe, like describing what water feels like, it's close to impossible. The woods is my second home, nearly all of the best lessons I have learnt have been from this place, with my father and Gale. I say nearly of course because of Peeta. I have taken him to the woods a couple of times and tried to teach him how to use a bow and arrow, but he was useless, but I'm useless at baking, so we learn from each other.

I see Gale up ahead in our usual meeting spot. His back hunched over as he picks at the grass beneath him. "Hey!" I shout over to him, and he immediately sits up straighter, looking at me over his shoulder.

"Hey Catnip!" He shouts, smiling at me.

I walk over to him, picking my feet up higher than usual due to the overgrown grass. I sit down next to him, and we both stare out into the distance for a while, imagining the world beyond the Districts, the games and the Capitol.

"Hows married life treating you?" Gale asks with a smirk, breaking the silence. I was terrified when I had to tell Gale about Peeta and I's engagement, and I had a right to be, he didn't take it too well. He said that I didn't love Peeta and I was only marrying him because I pitied him. He believed that until the wedding - which took a lot of convincing to get him too attend - because he told me afterwards that he had never seen me so happy, not even in the woods.

Although he is okay with it now, he still likes to make the odd joke about me being married at seventeen.

"It's good, great actually." I reply with a smile. "Hows the mining life treating you?"

He glares at me jokingly, then smiles. "Horribly."

"Gale you know I will give you and your family money, I have more than enough!" I tell him but he just shakes his head. I have told him over and over again that I'll supply him with money, instead of him working in the mines, but he won't take a single penny. He doesn't even like me bringing his family game so I always go by when he's working and give it to Hazelle, who is always grateful.

Out of nowhere I feel a burning sensation in my throat and then bile in my mouth. I jump up quickly, and run over to the nearest bushes, letting it all come out. I feel Gale pull my braid back and rub my back slowly until I finally stop gagging.

"Are you okay, Katniss?" He asks as I sit back down on the grass. The fact that he called me 'Katniss' and not 'Catnip' proves he is being serious.

"Uh yeah, I'm fine, thanks." I say, gratefully smiling at him.

"Is that the first time that has happened?"

It's not. It has been happening the past week. Peeta has been there only a couple of times and I have just brushed it off as a stomach bug but I'm starting to worry now.

I shake my head. "The past week, every morning."

"You should go get that checked out." He tells me in all seriousness.

I nod. Finally accepting that I do need to ask my mother about it. "I should go and see her. Sorry about today, hunting and all." I say, getting up and brushing the grass off my pants.

"It's fine Catnip! Tell me what your mother says, please?"

"Yeah, of course." I say, and walk away towards the fence.

I open the door to Peeta and I's house, then realising he has gone to the bakery, close the door again and make my way to my mothers house.

I don't bother knocking and just walk in. My mother is sitting on the couch reading and I'm guessing Prim is upstairs in her bedroom.

"Hi, Katniss." My mother says with a smile, looking at me over her book.

"Katniss!" I hear Prim squeal as she runs down the stairs.

"Hey!" I say, wrapping my arms around her tiny frame. "Prim, do you mind if I could just talk with mum for a while? I will come up and see you when I'm done." I ask her, wanting to talk with my mother about it alone. Thankfully she nods and runs back upstairs.

"What is it dear?" My mum asks, looking at me worriedly.

"Well its just, the past week every morning I have been vomiting, and I don't know what it is and I was getting kind of worried." I say. Her expression changes from worried to serious in a matter of seconds and it starts to really worry me.

"Katniss, I need you to answer me honestly now, okay?" I nod.

"How many times have you had intercourse and who with?" She asks.

It totally came as a shock, it was the last thing I expected her to say. A little embarrassed, and uncomfortable about talking about my sex life with my mother I stare at my hands in my lap and answer her question. "I really have no idea how many times and I have only done it with Peeta."

"When was the last time you had your period?" She asks. I again feel very uncomfortable but answer her question. "The start of last month."

She nods slightly and says, "Have you been feeling different recently, like one minute for angry and the next your happy? Anything like that?"

After I think about it I realise I have, so I nod. Getting slightly fed up of her questions I say, "Mum, why are you asking me all of these questions? What's wrong?"

She looks at me and I honestly can't work out her emotions. She looks up looking at me dead in the eye and says, "Katniss, your pregnant."
