Chapter 18: Being Short Sucks

"Where the heck did you find that?" I reach up to snatch it back from him but the bastard lifts it higher than I can reach.

I hate tall people exploiting short people just because they're vertically challenged.

"Aw how cute! You can't reach it!"

"Hanley, I really don't have time for this right now! Just give me my paper!"

"On one condition, Tinkerbell."

"What do you want?"

"I want you to meet me near the locker room under the bleachers after school today. I have something important to ask you."

"Okay fine, just give me my paper!" I glance to the clock... 3 minutes before school's out.

He lowers the paper so I can finally snatch it and I immediately take off running down the hall like a crazy woman.

"See you at the bleachers in a few!" Hanley yells down the hall. I can hear his disgusting guffaw as it echos.

I only have two minutes left to turn it in or else I'm doomed and Mr. Jenkin's office is on the other side of the school!

I'm running so fast that I don't even realize when I slam into something hard, causing me to fall to the ground on my butt. Absentmindedly I mutter an apology before I get up and keep running, but someone grabs my wrist from behind and pulls me to a stop.

Instantly I assume the worst and yell "Stop it Hanley!" before trying to snap my wrist out of his grip and but it doesn't budge. Instead, I'm turned around and I'm surprised.

"Cody?"

"What did you just say?"

"Your name?"

"No before that." His expression is serious. Like a you-don't-want-to-mess-with-me-I'm-a-pro-wrestler serious.

"N-nothing. It doesn't matter. Now let me go," I plead, gesturing to his grip on my wrist.

"Did Hanley do something to you?" He surprisingly releases me but his eyes suddenly turn three shades darker and I gulp down my fear.

I take a few steps back, afraid of catching on fire from his rage-induced flame. His hands are by his sides clenched in Arthur meme fists.

He means business.

"I-I... uh..." I stutter, apparently forgetting how to speak English. Facepalm.

"I said, did Hanley try to hurt you again?"

"I uh... gotta go!" I take off in a dead sprint down the hallway and I'm surprised that he doesn't follow me.

That's right it's because he doesn't care anymore. He's not my boyfriend.

I turn in the paper with less than thirty seconds to spare and I can now relax. Except now I've got to go meet Hanley under the bleachers where the football team's locker room is.

I drag myself all the way over there and at first I don't see him, but just before I'm about to walk away, two hands grab my waist and press my back into the wall.

"What the heck, Hanley, you scared me!"

"Shush. I have something to request of you."

"Okay. I'm listening."

"As you know, the football team is going to win the state championship next week and when we do, I'm gonna need a date for the celebration ceremony and party."

"Not gonna happen," I brush him off me but he grabs my hand and pulls me back closer.

"Hanley, I have a boyfriend."

"He doesn't have to know," he adds with a wink.

"You're disgusting. Good bye."

"You're going to that party with me one way or another, Skylar."

I don't even bother to reply as I walk to my car.

"Wait, doesn't he know you have a boyfriend?" Chelsea asks, shocked by the news.

"Yeah he does. I thought he got kicked off the team."

"No, he got a concussion and is benched for the rest of the season."

"Well I hope they lose the championship so they can wipe their cocky smiles right off their faces."

"We both know that's not gonna happen. With Cody as the QB, we won't lose."

"Yeah, but it would be nice to see them bumped down a notch."

"True. Their egos are all ten times bigger than their penises."

"You could say that again." I roll my eyes.

"Anyways, are you excited for the log cabin retreat this weekend?"

"Who's going to that anyways?"

"Me, Jen, Landon, and a few of his football buddies. Also a couple cheerleaders. You and Rolfe are both invited too."

I already know "football buddies" means that Cody is most likely going to be there, but oh well. Maybe I can talk to him again about being friends. I just miss having him in my life and all this drama is really getting to me. I seek peace within my Earth and an end to this seemingly never-ending tornado of problems that is my life.

Anyways, how do we think the log cabin getaway will go? (P.S. the answer is: shittily) What's your prediction as to what's gonna happen?

On a real note,  is everyone excited for the holidays? And what holiday is your favorite? And don't say your birthday because that's a cop out.
Mine's Valentines Day because I'm a sap.

Until next time my cuties,
xoxo,
Bea
