Hazel Peterson

I let out a shaky breath as I neared the new school I had transferred to.

My eyes scanned over my phone, checking what time it was.

9:16 AM

Crap, I'm late.

I readjusted my backpack strap and walked up to the school steps.

I looked up and read the sign above me, ' Maple Wood College'

Opening the door that leads to the schools' office, I saw a middle-aged woman clicking away on the computer on her desk.

She had a name tag on her chest that read "Hellen".

"How may I help you?" She said in a bored tone, still keeping her eyes fixed on the computer.

"I'm a new student, I'm here to-"

"Pick up a schedule?" She interrupted me.

I replied with a 'yes'.

"Name?" She demanded.

"Hazel Peterson" She nodded and typed what looked like my name into the computer.

"A transfer from Boston? Wow, how exciting." She gasped with fake excitement.

I moved my hair behind my ear as I waited for my schedule.

I heard the sounds of a printer and the woman grabbed a paper from it, handing it to me.

"This is your schedule – your first class is down the hall to your right. Have a nice day, and welcome to the home of the Falcons." she mocked the sound of the animal as she finished her robot-like dialogue.

With my schedule in hand, I continued down the hallway in silence as I looked for the correct door.

As I passed by a glass case in the hallway, my heart started to beat faster as I saw pictures of her.

So they're mourning her here, too.

Once I spotted the classroom I grabbed the handle with the palm of my hand and twisted it.

The door let out a small creaking sound as I entered the classroom.

The class grew silent and all eyes fell on me.

I started to fiddle with my fingers as I usually did when I felt nervous.

I handed the teacher my schedule. Once he checked that I was in the correct room he gave me it back and flashed a friendly smile.

Well, my name is Mr. Richards, nice to meet you!

He smiled once again.

He looked around the room scanning the few empty seats that were left. As he did, his eyes came in contact with the edgy hispanic and the bubbly asian who had an empty seat sandwiched in between them.

I read Mr.Richards facial expression as he was lost in thought.

After a few seconds he looked back at me.

"Just sit there, you seem smart so I don't you will get too distracted." He complimented me.

I made my way to the seat next to the boy who kept his eyes on her.

Once I sat down, the boy next to me spoke,

"So what's your name gorgeous?" He said with a devilish smirk.

My eyes scanned the boy's face with disgust as his smug look was still present.

"It's her first day don't scare her off already Sebastian" Kora laughed as I redirected my attention to the short haired girl.

"Kora Woods, nice to meet ya" Her smile was genuine, and a small wave to go along with it.

I mustered up the best smile I could, trying to be rude and said a small introduction.

With five minutes left of class, Mr. Richards started to erase the board in front of him, some students talked and others put away their things.

I looked back down at my hand that I started drawing on when Kora noticed my ink tainted skin.

"Wow! That's really pretty, Hazel, you're really talented." Kora was impressed at the detailed rose I drew.

"I drew this, but it isn't that good." She frowned while showing me a picture of a girl holding a daisy.

A picture that was clearly better than mine.

My mouth parted slightly in surprise. "Kora, that's great," I said, genuinely proud of her..

"That's not really my drawing, it's my boyfriend's, I'll show you mine at lunch" she promised me as we heard the bell go off.

"Come on babe lets go" a brunette came next to Kora and interlocked his fingers with hers.

"Let's go, Hazel, you can hang out with us" she gestured to me to follow along.

"Are you sure?" I awkwardly asked.

"Yeah silly, let's go," she said walking out the door as I followed behind her.

"This is Henry by the way," she said pointing to the boy who she's holding hands with.

"Welcome to Maple Wood" he greeted.

"Nice to meet you," I said as we entered our next class,

Maybe this year won't be that bad,

Or so I thought.
