You know, thinking back, I'm not sure how I didn't see it. Well, let's back up for a second here. I did see it. I saw it every time I looked at him, from the crows feet at the corners of his eyes to the strong line of his jaw. I saw how incredible he was. And maybe that's why I didn't see it. Maybe that's why I didn't see us. I knew just how talented and brilliant he was. I just wasn't sure he saw that in me. But enough about that, you're here for the story. And I intend to tell it to you.
"Zoe, wake up!" I heard Joe call from downstairs, pulling my from my blissful sleep.
Groaning, I rolled over in my bed, "Joe! Knock it off, I'm trying to sleep!" I yelled back before burying myself in my blankets.
This peace was short lived, because the next thing I knew my blankets were ripped from me. The cold air was stark and sudden, instantly waking me up.
"Bloody hell, Joe!" I yelled, sitting up straight and grabbing for them.
He ran out of my room with them, almost tripping over the large duvet as it trailed behind him. Rolling my eyes, I got out of bed and chased after him.
"I'm gonna kill you, Joseph Sugg!" I yelled as I chased him through our house.
However, it turns out I didn't need to kill him. Joe, like the true Sugg he is, tripped and fell flat on his face. I started laughing as he moaned, a tangled heap of limbs and blankets on the floor.
"Jesus..." Joe moaned, his face in his hands.
I made my way closer to him before squatting down beside him, a rather smug smile on my lips. "That's what you get for waking me up, ya cringy little goblin." I said smugly, my arms folded across my chest.
He sighed, exasperated, "Excuse me for thinking you'd want to see your stupid boyfriend when he got back from India." He grumbled.
Everything seemed to freeze, "My boyfriend?" I asked, my voice a soft whisper. "It was a joke, Zo. Jack gets back today. I figured you'd want to see him after, what was it, 3 months? 4?" Joe said, still rubbing his face.
"He's not my boyfriend." I said rather plainly, my voice and face devoid of emotion, before turning and walking to my room as if in a trance.
Jack's coming back from India today. Jack's coming back. Jack.
"You better be getting your arse ready, Zoe! We're meeting them for dinner. They're throwing a party at their flat to celebrate." Joe called after me.
I stopped walking, "Joseph Sugg you woke me up early in the morning because we have plans for dinner?" I asked incredulously, turning around to face my brother.
He rolled his eyes at me, "Yes, Zoe. I'm completely stupid." He said, making a face.
"Well why then?" I asked, throwing my hands in the air in exasperation.
"I wanted to take you out to lunch. Bloody hell, Zo, I was just trying to be a nice little brother." He said angrily, but I detected a twinge of sadness in his voice. I'd hurt his feelings, poor chap.
"Oh, Joe," I breathed, "I'm sorry. I'd love to go to lunch with you, I'll be ready in half an hour, yeah?" I said, grinning.
A crooked smile crept onto Joe's lips, "Yeah." He said, happily flipping his fringe from his eyes.
I jokingly offered him a small curtsey before turning and walking into my room. I shut the door behind me and, leaning against it, slid down until I was seated on the floor. I put my head in my hands, my heart pounding at the news I'd just received.
