Triwizard Conversations

The next couple of days was like every other year. We woke up, had breakfast, attended classes, had dinner, and went to sleep. It wasn't much different. The Hufflepuff room was filled with laughter and people sitting all over the place chatting away. When the clock struck 7 P.M., everyone got up and started going up to the Great Hall for dinner. I walked along with my friends Janice Parkinson and Gwennie Truman out of our house and seated down next to them in the Hufflepuff table. Cedric arrived not too shortly afterwards and took a seat next to me with his friends. I peeked over to the Gryffindor table watching for Fred and George. There were two girls seated in between them; Angelina Johnson and Alicia Spinnet. How could anyone not know them? They were quite beautiful actually and they were some of the best quidditch players at Hogwarts. I don't know how or why, but a weird feeling came over me when I saw the two girls laugh with them. I didn't know what it was, but it wasn't a good feeling. George looks over to me and waves; I smile and wave back, but turn my attention to Janice when she begins telling a story about a Ravenclaw boy she's been eyeing.

Dumbledore takes his podium and makes an announcement explaining to us that this year, Hogwarts was chosen to host the Triwazrd Tournement. "Well now that we're all settled in and sorted, I'd like to make an announcement. This castle will not only be your home this year but home to some very special guests as well. You see, Hogwarts has been chosen to host a legendary event: The Triwizard Tournament. The Tournament brings together three schools for a series of magical contests. From each school a single student is selected to compete. Now let me be clear. If chosen, you stand alone. And trust me when I say, these contest are not for the faint-hearted."

Everyone's attention was turned towards Professor Dumbledor's words; an interest seemed to somewhat spark in everyone's eyes. Dumbledore introduced two schools that will be joining and sharing our school this year for the Tournament, the Beauxbaton ladies and the Durmstrang gentlemen. As far as I have heard, the Beauxbatons girls were all veela somehow. My mother wanted me to attend Beauxbaton instead of Hogwarts because she said with me being half-veela, that school would work out fine for me. My father however, begged to differ and talked her into allowing me to attend Hogwarts since Draco was also going to be there.

When the Beauxbaton girls did their entrance and danced their way in, all eyes were on them. I turned away for a moment and noticed how focused the young males of Hogwarts were, while some girls sneered and spat on their beauty. It was the opposite when the Durmstrang boys entered. All the girls' eyes were glued to them while some of the boys cursed them under their breaths. It amused me to see all the different reactions of each person here actually. There was one person from Durmstrang that made everyone, even the boys, gasp when he walked through the door, Viktor Krum. It was kind of surprising that the world's best seeker would be here at Hogwarts to attend school with us all. I smile and turn my attention directly to Ron who was happily talking among his friends and flashing looks at Krum; like Ginny said, he's in love.

Dumbledore proceeded and introduced a member of the ministry to us, Barty Crouch. Barty Crouch set an age limit for safer reasons regarding the tournament; you must be seventeen to participate. It caused a big roar throughout the entire hall with people disagreeing and not happy with the new procedures. The word was final however, and no changes were to be made.

Something strange happened between all of this though; as Dumbledore was informing all of us of the rules and regulations, some sort of storm started to stir up up above. Lightening struck and thunder echoed through the Great Hall. A couple students began screaming. Out of nowhere, a string of light shot up in the sky and the storm calms. As we all looked to the direction of where the light came from, an elderly and chubby man stood in the corner of the Great Hall tucking his wand away. His eye stood out to me because he only had one of them, which I'm sure every other student focused on that too. From the Gryffindor table, I can hear Seamus Finnigan mention a name, Mad Eye Moody. Mad Eye Moody? Merlin's Beard, he's known to be the greatest auror ever! I keep my eyes locked on him for a while thinking of how my parents hated him so much. They constantly talked about Mad Eye Moody and all he has contributed into the wizarding world, but most of the things they said weren't too polite. I'll just have to see for myself now; everyone that my parents scolded about to me actually turned out to be exceptionally amazing people like the Weasleys or Harry.

Dinner was over and I was walking back to the Hufflepuff house alone; Janice and Gwennie had gone to introduce themselves to the Durmstrang boys right after we were dismissed and Cedric stayed behind to talk to his friends about joining the Tournament. Walking up ahead of me was Fred and George being accompanied by Angelina and Alicia. I really wanted to pop over there suddenly and join in casually, but I didn't do it. Honestly, I wouldn't like it if that were to happen to me. I watched as the four of them climbed up to the second floor corridor before I also descended down into the basement.

Down in the Hufflepuff house later, I sat on the couch going over some homework Professor Snape had assigned in potions class. He loved assigning us essays which required the most work and time for a decent grade. I sat and flipped through my potions book back and fourth trying to write an essay on 'How to Make A Girding Potion.' Essays was not something I was good at; neither was potions, but I often got by because Snape knew my parents. He liked them, so I usually got an excuse to pass.

"Not asleep yet Viola?" I turned around to see Cedric standing at the base of the stairs and looking at me with a smile.

"I should be asking you the same, Cedric." I returned also with a smile. He chuckled and walked over taking a seat next to me.

"What are you doing?"

"Potions essay for Snape."

"Ugh, Snape. He's the worst, Viola."

"You really think so? I think he's quite likable. You just got to look past his coldness actually. Don't judge him, Cedric!" I said playfully as he laughs and holds his palms up in defense. It got silent as I continue to work and Cedric stares blankly at me; I can feel his gaze, but I didn't feel like looking up.

"Viola, what do you think about me joining the Triwizard Tournament? You're one of my best friends; your input counts."

I sighed and looked up at him before saying, "I'm not doubting you Ced, but... Are you sure you want to join? Dumbledore did say that these tasks can be very dangerous. There's rumors that people have actually died in the games you know."

It took Cedric a moment to answer me, "I know..."

Seeing his downed face, I continued, "But Cedric, if you want to then... Go for it! Don't let me stop you. I mean... It is your last year, if you want to then do it." A small smile appears on Cedric's face before he looks up over at me and nods his head. Until we both head to bed, Cedric stays up and helps me complete my essay. He marked pages for me as I thought of what to write and he went over my essay to make sure it was valid for full credit.
