He laughed. "They come back automatically. Trust me." He held out his hand and helped me out.
As inch by inch my body rose above the surface of the water, my legs reappeared, along with my jeans, which were perfectly dry!
I stood up, and whacked him on the arm. "Why didn't you tell me, you goon?!"
"I couldn't! They thought if I told you too soon, you'd think I was crazy and refuse to come with me!"
I thought about that for a minute. "Ok, you make a fair point. But still!" I laughed.
"I'm a mermaid!" I said happily. "So can you do that too?"
"Yeah! Everyone from our world can."
"You are the princess of the seas, your highness." I turned and saw Duckie standing there, smiling at me.
"So I come from a mermaid world?! This is better than a Disney movie!" I said happily. I reached over and hugged Ryan. He hugged me back tightly. We both remembered Duckie at the same time, and jumped apart.
Ryan cleared his throat.
Duckie chuckled. "Relax, kids. I know all about it. As far as I am concerned, you may have your romance while we're up here. But once we get down below, you must cease your affections. I know it won't be easy, but you must."
We were all silent for a moment. Ryan and I starred at each other. I knew he didn't want to stop as much as I did. It was amazing how well we could read each other. Everything had changed with that one kiss. Suddenly, I could tell his mood, his thoughts, his emotions, everything. And I knew he could do the same with me.
"How is that possible?" I asked him aloud.
"I don't think Duckie would want me to answer that question." He said sadly.
"What question? Please do not ignore me, it's quite rude; I am standing right here, you know."
"Sorry." We both said. Then Ryan continued. "She wants to know how we can read each other's thoughts and emotions and all that."
"Oh. Oh dear...."
"What?" I asked. "Why is that a bad thing?"
"Well, it is not exactly bad, your highness. If you were two ordinary people, it would be wonderful. But seeing as you are the princess and he is your servant, it is in fact quite bad." Duckie said.
"Because," Ryan said. "In our world, Ellie, when you can read someone's thoughts and feelings, it means that you have found your soul mate, your true love, whatever you want to call it; it means you have found the right person to be with forever."
"Oh." Was all I could say. I was happy for a moment, then reality set in, and I had to keep myself from crying again. "So..."
"So we have to live our lives as if we don't feel this way. As if we're just friends."
"You will most likely be married to a prince some day, highness." Duckie said softly. "There is a young man your father has in mind for you."
"What?! He hasn't even met me yet and he wants to marry me off already? I'm going home." I turned and walked away. I didn't make it two steps before Ryan grabbed my hand.
"He didn't mean it like that. He means that you father wants you to be happily married one day in the future, just like any father. He means he has a young man that he hopes you will like, that's all. He won't force you, he's a good man, Ellie." Ryan said. I could tell he felt just as heartbroken as I did.
