The creaks of the entrance door cut the light atmosphere of the room, shattering your focus on the program playing on the screen of the television. Your gaze flickered to the source of the unexpected sound.

By the door stood your lover for many years Kurono Hari, whose eyes seemed much more subfusc than usual, like they got weary of reading paperworks word by word; and his usual immaculate cloak seemed to be marred by indiscernible blemish and grooves (though as a person who has been under the influence of Overhaul for years, you could easily spot as little as a speck of tiny dust from far away).

Removing the hood of his raincoat and exposing his silver, sharp hair; Kurono did not spare a single glance at your direction and made a beeline to the kitchen to grab a glass of water. You simply watched his every movement from the couch, with the television still on as a background noise.

You watched as he turned on the faucet, eyeing on the running water as it filled the glass below it. Once the water reached the amount to Kurono's satisfaction, he shut it off and swigged all of the water in a few gulps.

He didn't set the glass in a gentle way, as well.

Troubled gaze, callous movements, dour countenance...

From the looks of it, it looked like he had a unendurable time at work, almost like he was slowly getting killed by it; if not by an outside source or directly.

"Hard day at work?" You softly questioned, cautiously making as little noise as possible in order to maintain the quiet atmosphere.

He did not have a proper response. He simply grunted and sat at the opposite side of the couch. He rested his head on top of the back rest as he massaged his temple.

"Is it the lackeys again?" You frowned. You want to help Kurono, but he always refuses to open up when it comes to work.

It has become an unmentioned downside of your relationship with a Yakuza. Though you were under the group's care for some time, you never planned to join them, and you intend to keep it that way. You knew the line of work is dangerous, but you wished he could talk a little of his problems, venting his stress and seeking for your comfort.

It had been like this for quite a while now. You knew what you were getting into when you fell for a guy like him, yet you chose to ignore the emotional stress that could overwhelm the two of you.

You were afraid if this keeps going on, it wouldn't last long.

"Can you keep that thing shut?" He mumbled as he glared at the television, not moving a single muscle.

You didn't complain. You simply obliged and reached for the remote, eliminating the only source of noise.

After turning off the device, the room suddenly became deadly silent. You felt uncomfortable with the noiseless atmosphere. You occasionally glanced at your lover, hoping that he would calm down and at least strike up a conversation or two to ease the tension.

Today looked worse than the previous days. The way the corners of his eyes crinkled with stress, and the unending inaudible sighs he let out. They told you that Kurono was not in the best of mood.

Still, you tried to ease the tension.

"Are you okay, Hari?" You asked, fiddling with your fingernails.

"What do you think?" He suddenly lifted his head and snapped at your way, eyes narrowing.

The corners of your mouth dropped at his sudden outburst. You immediately mumbled a 'never mind' as a response and looked away.

It was rare for him to snap at you. Most of the time, he's calm and collected. If he is angry, he leaves the room or outright ignores you. When he does snap at you, you would argue back (which, of course while it doesn't happen much, won't end well) or simply keep your anger in (the latter is the best option among the two. Trust me).

Now, you find arguing pointless.

Kurono immediately regained his composure as soon as he saw your frown. His gaze softened, and he glanced away, giving his attention to the coffee table in front of him.

As you tried to ignore his presence, you thought of turning on the television once again. However, you remembered the reason why it was shut off in the first place, and growled inaudibly at the strained silence.

It was no use of staying here. You'll give him space he needs. There's no point in staying with him in the same room, that'll save you from heartache.

Yoy lifted your body to leave your seat, but his next word stopped you in your tracks. "Sorry."

You blinked. What was that? I'm sure you heard it wrong...

"What?"

Surely, he did not just say...

He didn't even look at you. "Sorry," he repeated.

It was rare for Kurono to even apologize. You knew he's stubborn, so you wouldn't think apologizing would be an option for him. He's the type of person to try to act like nothing ever happened, or do small gestures to make it look like he's sorry for anything he has done. Never has he expressed it verbally. To think he would actually say that word...

"I..." you bit your lip, unsure of what do to. "It's...okay, I understand..."

What should you do? Should you leave? But that would make your words seem insincere. Should you stay? You couldn't even last a second in this now awkward conversation! You didn't expect this outcome. How can you deal with this?

People from other parts of the world may be worrying about their safety and their life right now, yet here you are, being anxious over... over an apology.

You glanced around, hoping to find an excuse. Eventually, you found the clock ticking. The sound was deafening, but the sight was a delight to see. You haven't made dinner yet, and it's quite late. Finally! An excuse!

"I-I'll just go and make dinner now—" you smiled nervously, pointing at the kitchen. However, Kurono suddenly stood up, making you step back out of instinct. You didn't expect the sudden action.

Kurono interpreted your reaction as fear and frowned even more, "Sorry," he apologized again, which made you even more confused than before. "We can just order."

Now, that. That makes you wonder.

Did you let a wrong Kurono inside your house?

Because Kurono would never even think about the food outside of the house! Influenced by Chisaki's mysophobic ways, he thinks that it's dirty to eat takeouts. Why would he all of a sudden proposed that sort of idea..?

"I-I—..." You glanced away at his indecipherable eyes. You don't know what to do. This isn't normal, at least when it comes to Kurono!

When he took a step forward (cautiously, because again, he thinks you're afraid of him), you snapped your gaze back at him, watching for his next action. He subtly expressed his hesitation, but you could clearly see it.

Hesitation... that is not how a Yakuza should act.

Suddenly, he hugged you. If you weren't surprised, you sure are now.

It wasn't like you never had any physical interaction with your lover, but it is just that his actions today made you feel unsure of the embrace.

"It was a hard day," he mumbled, burying his face in your neck. "Rappa wouldn't stop trying to challenge the boss, even when the boss is busy. I had to take care of him, though he wouldn't care any less."

He made you sit down on his lap, ranting about everything that happened today. Each time you moved, his grip would get tighter. He was cautious and not willing to let you leave out of his grasp.

It was quite sudden, but there was unbreakable smile on your face as your eyes stared at your intertwined hand.

That evening, you temporarily forgot dinner.
