Chapter 19

I woke up around 5:30 and decided to make a nice breakfast for the three of us, since we would need the energy. I made some eggs and two cubes of meat for each of us. I also found a box of tea in the cabinet and boiled some water for it. I ate and grabbed a backpack and a drawstring for each of us. I woke them up around six so that they could eat. While they ate, I wrote a note for the girls explaining were we were going. I put a lollipop for each of them on the note.

"Good morning boys." I said throwing my hair into a ponytail.

"How are you so awake right now?" Landon asked drinking his tea.

"Umm this is normal for me." I said with a grin.

"Right, because you don't sleep." Blake said with a yawn.

"Yes. Now Landon, how do you feel?"

"Back to normal. I think I just had a twenty four hour thing. Nova on the other hand, not so much." He responded and I nodded. She probably just had a bad strand of the flu.

"She hasn't had a seizure, right?"

"Not that I know of, but she does shake, but then again, sometimes sick people shake."

"Alright, well it's gonna take an hour to get there and back, and I want to be back before noon. If we leave now, we can spend two hours at the hospital and a while at the other stores in the intersection."

"Sounds perfect." Blake said grabbing a backpack and a drawstring, Landon doing the same.

"Alright then, lets go." With that we were off. We didn't talk for about ten minutes then I broke the silence, "Blake pistol, Landon rifle, and I'll take my pistol. Do not shoot unless absolutely necessary. We are not splitting up."

"This center is a very small hospital with one or two operating rooms, so it shouldn't take long to clear it." Landon said

"Perfect. Blake, in each room, you are looking for any medication books and anything that numbs. Landon look at the list, and I'll grab sterilization things."

"That works. I think there might be a CVS Pharmacy in that intersection and if that's the case we can fill all our bags up with those." Landon said.

"If that's the case Blake only needs to get the book and and any pills we can from the pharmacy. If i'm not mistaken, the backpack with tools is under my seat, Blake you can empty it and use it to hold meds." He nodded and did as he was told. The rest of the ride consisted of us making the plan. Since I was the best shot according to the boys I would go first since we were running low. We would check every room then head to Cvs. It only took 35 minutes to get there and from the looks of it there wouldn't be to many of them inside. I stopped the truck and pocketed the keys,

"Ready boys." I asked jumping out.

"As ready as we'll ever be." Blake responded while Landon just nodded. We walked to the door but they were locked. While the boys looked around to make sure no one or nothing crept up on us I picked up a medium size rock and threw it as hard as I could at the window, the window cracked and so I threw it again and again. After maybe five tries it broke, and we were in. We didn't talk but there were easily twenty zombies on the first floor alone. They didn't all approach at once so we were able to take ten of them with the machete and our knives. The other tenish we had to use our guns for, there was a swift that sprinted right for me but right before it grabbed me Landon shot it. We moved quickly, the boys loading bags and me stabbing or shooting the zombies that tried to get us. The second and third floor didn't have many there was probably 17 in total. I was out of ammo after 13 and had to use my knife for the rest. We got to the hospital around 8 and left at probably 10:30, since CVS was right across the street the boys dumped the three bags they managed to get in the car and we walked.

We walked into the store after breaking the window once again, I told the boys what pills to get and gave them my backpack as well. I did a quick check of the store and I saw someone run at me. He was shorter than either of the boys and I didn't have time to react before he punched me in the face.I stumbled backwards and hit my head on the shelf and he punched me again and again. A scream came out of me. He put his hand over my mouth and started dragging me to the door. My face hurt but I elbowed him as hard as I could in the stomach. He stopped for a second and I took my foot and tried to kick back, catching the rug. I elbowed back again and he stopped for no more than thirty seconds. I moved fast enough that I could grab the switchblade in my pocket and stab him. I got him in the thigh and he screamed in pain and let go. I punched him in the face and then kneed him where the sun doesn't shine. The boys got to the front before I managed to take him to the ground. Landon held him like he was in handcuffs and Blake pushed me behind him.

"WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU?" Blake screamed at the man.

"Just a man looking for a pretty young thing." Blake walked forward and punched him square in the jaw. The man spit on him as Blake took the knife from my hand and pressed it against his neck.

"You piece of shit! Get the fuck out of here before I end your miserable life! Lay another hand on my girl and it will be the last time you move!" Blake said continuing to scream.

"How'd you manage to get that?" The man asked with a smirk. Blake plunged the blade into his thigh once again. The man gritted his teeth, but didn't scream. I ran forward and grabbed Blakes arm before he could do anything else.

"BLAKE LOOK AT ME! STOP! LET THE MAN GO, SO WE CAN GET WHAT WE CAME FOR."

"SKYLAR HE COULD HAVE RAPED YOU OR WORSE!" Blake yelled back.

"BUT HE DIDN'T SO JUST HAVE LANDON GO OUTSIDE AND MAKE SURE HE LEAVES YOU GO GET THE MEDS AND I WILL LOOK AROUND FOR THINGS THE KIDS MIGHT LIKE."

"Fine. But I'm looking at your face when we get back."

"Fine." I said before walking up to the man.
"You're lucky I stopped him."

"No sweetheart, you're lucky that he's here." He said with another smirk. I punched him once again before heading down the small toy isle. Landon was still outside while I grabbed a couple small toys and more coloring books for the girls. Then I walked to the front to grab candy. None of it had gone bad yet so I filled the rest of my drawstring with whatever I could grab. Blake came to the front and we all walked to the car together.

"The man's gone, took off in a small blue car heading south." Landon said as Blake handed him his stuff back but still wore my backpack. We both nodded.

"To the grocery store." I said dumping the things I got into the glove box.

"You aren't going" Blake said stepping in front of me.

"You aren't stopping me." I said as sternly as possible.

"Yes I am. Your face is all bruised and starting to swell, your lip is bleeding, your cheek is bleeding, and your eye is already turning black."

"I'm going with. I can still use my arms and my legs. I don't need my head to pick things up." I replied, crossing my arms.

"Blake just let her come. You can stand right next to her the whole time. But there is no way you are gonna keep her in that truck." Landon said. Finally Blake reluctantly agreed.

"Fine. But you aren't carrying anything." I sighed,

"Fiiiine. But let's go I want to be back soon." I said handing my drawstring to Landon. He in turn handed me the pistol that had a couple rounds left. I checked my watch, 11:23. Great we're spending another hour in the grocery store then the half hour it takes to get back. We walked into the store and there was three normal zombies, all of which Blake took out. We walked down every aisle, grabbing everything that hadn't expired. We filled all the backpacks with flour, and the drawstrings with canned food, that hadn't expired. After an hour we were done and heading home. I was driving, even though Blake didn't want me to. I was going 80 the whole way home and we made it in about 20 minutes. I grabbed two of the backpacks that had things that go in the kitchen and a bottle of really strong advil and a bottle of sleeping pills for Nova. I put the bags in the kitchen to find the girls at the table. Ava was the first to speak,

"Skylar what the heck happened to your face."

"We ran into a guy at a store and I fought him before the boys could find where we were."

"Are you ok? Your face doesn't look to good." I nodded and saw that Liv looked scared.

"I might have a minor concussion but that's probably it, other than the bruises."

"Why don't Liv, Blake and I make dinner tonight so you can rest."

"You don't have to do that."

"But you should get some rest if you have a concussion."

"Thank you Ava, I think I might take a short nap after I put the stuff in the backpacks away and give these to Nova."

"You give those to Nova and I'll help unpack things." I smiled,

"Thanks. Wake me up in two hours or when dinners ready, since I know Blakes gonna tell me the same thing." She laughed and started putting the flour in the cabinets while I went to Novas room, she still looked sick, but she looked better.

"Hey Sky. Wait what happened to your face?"

"Got into a fight with some pervert at CVS, before the boys got to me. Anyway. I brought you some stronger advil, and some sleeping pills. You should feel better by Friday."

"Sky todays like Tuesday."

"And you have the flu. I'm gonna go wash up then take a nap."

"See you in a little bit then."

"See ya." And with that I walked to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. That's when I noticed how bad I looked. I had a cut under my left eye, my lip was split and still bleeding slightly, my right eye was already black, and I had a bruise on my left cheek. Looking at my abdomen I noticed more bruises. I took three advil that I left in the medicine cabinet then slowly started washing the blood off my face. It stung a little but after five minutes I was done. I went to my room and threw my shirt in the corner, there was blood on it, not a lot, but enough that it was noticeable. I threw on one of Blakes long shirts on and threw my shorts in the corner. I had grabbed a cold washcloth to place on my face to make it hurt less. I couldn't be sure but I'm pretty sure I have a mild concussion. I crawled into bed and put the cloth over my head. I don't know how long I was asleep but apparently it was long enough for Blake to come in and sit with me with dinner. I sat up and my head started pounding. He handed me my food and I ate slowly. I gave the plate back to Blake and he put it on the end table.

"What time is it?" I asked in a whisper.

"It's 9:15" He responded with the same tone.

"Why'd you let me sleep all day?"

"Because some guy bashed your head on a shelf and bruised your beautiful face." He said placing a soft kiss on my forehead.

"But now I won't sleep tonight."

"Yes you will." He said sitting up and putting his arm around me. I snuggled closer and put my head on his chest. He rubbed my back while I fell asleep once again. I woke up the next morning around five like normal and I noticed Blake still in the same position as last night. I probably only had a grade 0 or maybe a grade 1 concussion so it would go away within maybe two-four days. I gently shook Blake awake.

"Hey, babe, lay down, you slept like that all night."

"Huh?" he asked still mostly asleep.

"Lay down." He laid down and I snuggled back into him. I slept until noon. I still had a slight headache but my face hurt more. I slowly got up and a wave of dizziness swept over me. I leaned onto the bed for support but after fifteen seconds I was fine. I went to my dresser and grabbed one of my pairs of sweats and a purple crop top. I pulled my wavy black hair into a low ponytail and went to the bathroom. I splashed some cold water on my face and looked in the mirror. There was more bruising than yesterday, but the cut under my eye was scabbed and my lip stopped bleeding. I took three more advil and went to check on Nova.

"Hey how ya feeling?" I asked

"Better. Almost back to new."

"That's great. If you're feeling better on Friday and my head stops hurting do you want to go on a ride?"

"Yea sounds like fun." She responded.

"Alright well I'm gonna go get some things done. I'll check on you later."

"Alright." She said and I left the room. I went to the kitchen and grabbed a glass of water and drank it all and refilled it to head to the living room.

"Hey Sky." Liv said excitedly coming over and giving me a hug.

"Hey Liv." I responded hugging her back.

"Do you feel better?"

"Yes I do thanks." I said with a smile.

"That's good. Do you want to color with us?"

"Maybe later but I'll watch you guys."

"Ok." She said going back to the coffee table. The boys were on the couch talking.

"Hey Sky, you look like shit. Are you feeling any better?" Landon asked.

"Yea but I think I'm just gonna hang out in my room for couple days just to like get rid of my headache."

"Do whatever you need to go. Feel better. If you need anything let me know." Landon said.

"Thanks Lan."
"No problem." He said and I started walking back to my room.

"Baby do you want me to come lay with you for a bit." Blake said as he entered the room a few hours later.

"If you want, but if you want you can stay out here."

"I'll be in in a little while then."

"Ok." I responded walking into my room and taking my pants off putting them back in the dresser then crawling back into bed. I was asleep for probably two or three hours before Blake came in with some pretzels.

"Hey you hungry?" He asked sitting down next to me.

"Not really, but if you wanna lay with me that would be nice."

"Alright." He said laying down. He gave me a quick kiss and I moved closer to him. I didn't wake up until 9 and Blake was still there. I woke him up.

"Blake did you eat?"

"Yea. Landon brought us something." He responded handing me a plate of salad and rice. "The girls wanted to cook you dinner."

"Awe that's so sweet." I said starting to eat. I didn't talk while I ate.

"How's your headache?" He asked as he put my plate on the end table.

"Almost gone." I responded.

"That's good, why don't you go back to sleep?"

"Shit I never checked on Nova." I said trying to get up, only to find that he was holding me back.

"Landon did, don't worry. She's not pale anymore and is eating more." I laid back down.

"That's good." We talked for a little before I fell back asleep. I woke up at five and the day went almost normal. The only thing different was I could only read for a couple minutes at a time. So I would read then walk around for a bit then read again. We ate lunch and dinner and Nova was up and moving around. We all went to our rooms around 9. And I fell asleep right away. I woke up at seven, feeling back to normal. I went to hang out with Duke, since I haven't given him any love lately. The others came out around eight.

"Nova you up for a ride?"

"Not today. I've been puking since like three this morning."

"Alright next time."
The next few weeks went by as normal. Nova finally got better. Blake and I got closer and Liv called me mom once or twice then apologized for it.
