Baekhyun and Chanyeol wants to marry but Mr.Byun want Baekhyun to marry a girl named Taeyeon. Taeyeon hate Baekhyun and Baekhyun hate Taeyeon too.
At this point, if I haven't stopped reading, then I'd be a saint. Grammar rules come first. That is a basic. For the purpose of your guidance, here is a set of rules that you can follow:-
1. Two words joined by 'and' are followed by 'are' because they are plural. So, it is -
Baekhyun and Chanyeol want to marry one another.
2. One single subject is always followed by a single verb. A single verb has an s added to it.
So it should be,
Mr.Byun wants Baekhyun to marry.
3. A plural subject is followed by a plural verb.
Dogs are friendly creatures.
4. Collective nouns take singular verbs because they are considered one.
EXO is amazing.
EXO consists of really talented vocalists, dancers and rappers.
The class was detained.
5. One of many.
The phrase 'one of' is always followed by a plural word, such as -
One of the boys
One of them
One of the classes
The verb that is added to this is always singular because the subject itself, 'one of' is singular. While it might be awkward to write a singular verb next to a plural word, that is how it works, so suck it up.
One of the classes was detained.
One of the boys eats chicken a lot.
6. Either/or and neither/nor
A) If both of the words are singular, then the verb will be singular -
Either Baekhyun or Chanyeol is responsible.
Neither Baekhyun nor Chanyeol is responsible.
B) (Proximity rule) If the word closer to the subject is plural then the verb is plural and if the verb is singular, then the subject is singular.
Either the dogs or Baekhyun eats the food that Chanyeol makes for himself.
Either Baekhyun or the dogs eat the food...
NOTE- Same goes for Neither and nor.
C) If one of the words is plural, then the verb will be plural.
Either the dogs or Baekhyun eat the food...
NOTE- You can choose between the rules. I personally recommend the Proximity Rule because it doesn't seem awkward. Also, don't tell me that my examples are invalid because Baek is a puppy himself.
So, this is the first guide. Do tell me what other guides you'd need. I think Tense and Punctuation are something I can't skip. For newer writers, I would like to make a singular/ plural guide. Also, identifying the subject is really important. And then we come to the story itself.
It is going to be a long journey.
Tell me what I should do next. It could be anything.
