A student I was counselling once told me that I should write a story about my life, because she thought it would inspire others and give them hope that things could always get better.
I don't know how much inspiration my words are capable of; but in honour of the students I work with - how hard I ask them to reflect on their worst experiences, how long I make them sit with their sadnesses, and how much I admire and respect their ability to trust me, a total stranger, with the most traumatic parts of their life stories - I gave it a crack anyway.
Readers, please be aware in advance that this book contains events and ideas that may be triggering at times, and some language that probably wouldn't be all that appropriate for a polite family function with your respectable Nonna.
Despite being inspired by the feelings associated with true events, this is a work of fiction, and can not be reproduced without the author's explicit consent.
