The Summons

The crime was committed and criminal apprehend so it follows that there must be a court case. So there is, but for a completely different matter as I didn't report the daylight robbery that happened in my house to the police. The criminal confessed to the crime and returned most of my stolen goods and the case was closed.

There was no further mention of marriage but I have been too busy to even talk to him properly. The cook off was unprecedented success except few minor issues. I am still cleaning our rooms almost a week after the party. There has been demand to host another cook off but I will think twice about holding one in the near future.

I come from school as per my schedule. I give Luke his normal afternoon snack. I am currently asking him to do his homework. We can go to the park once his dad gets here if his homework is done by that time.

Suddenly there is a knock on the door which is unusual in itself. People coming here don't usually knock on my door. My door is normally open to visitors except when I am spending alone time with Sam. Visitors just barge in if my door is open. They know not to disturb us if it is locked.

I tentatively open the door. I am facing the court bailiff standing at the door of my room. He is serving me some official papers. I miss a heartbeat trying to think what crime I might have committed. This is summons for me to come as a witness in a court case he explains. I breath a silent sigh of relief.

This case is a civil case for Breach of contract. I am ordered to attend the court and testify for the plaintiff Mr. Gary Smith against the defendant wait for it 'Mr. Sam Kalashnikov'.

So I need a court case to know Sam's real surname is 'Kalashnikov' Who would have thought his surname would be so explosive. It suits him. I know now why he was refusing to tell me his real surname. If my surname was Kalashnikov then I would try to hide it as well. This is probably why he registered a different surname for Luke so that he wouldn't get teased about it in the school.

I will find his birth date during my appearance in the court if I am lucky. It might be the anniversary of Hiroshima bombing or some equally catastrophic event in the history.

I will use his surname to tease him in the future. If he mentions marriage again I can refuse on the grounds of his surname alone. I can't wait to see his reaction.

"Mr. Sam Kalashnikov, Good afternoon" I greet him at the door of my apartment.

"What did you call me?"

"Mr. Sam Kalashnikov. Isn't that your real surname."

"Not really. It's just my surname on the paper. I took it when I was a young captain in the rebel army. How do you say it? Yes I got it. I just thought it sounded cool. I wanted to change it but all my businesses are registered under this name so I have to go through a lot of hassle to get a new one."

"So what is your real surname?"

"That's the thing I don't know my real surname or my birthdate. I never knew who my parents were."

"You better sit down and tell me."

He looks weary and his eyes look haunted "What do you want to know?"

I know it's going to be difficult for him to relive his past but I am hurt as well.

"For starters why didn't you tell me any of this when I was bawling my eyes out telling you of my mothers neglect."

He just shrugs his shoulders. "You know I am not used to talking about myself. Besides what you needed at the time was a sympathetic ear not additional overload about my past."

"I want to know everything."

"It's impossible to tell you everything but you can ask questions and I will answer them."
