Just Hold On- Wooflan

Rob's P.O.V.

"Rob? I'm scared." Lachlan's voice shook, reaching out in the dark for me. I could barely see the outline of his body in the non-existent light but even then I could tell that he was trembling from head to toe, his head looking to the ground in fear.

I scooted close to him, his warmth the only source of comfort in the cold, bare, concrete room and just held him. There were no words that could comfort him.

It wasn't long before he was fast asleep on my shoulder, his tears dry on his cheeks and his shaking ceased. I couldn't sleep. Nothing was going to allow me sleep, especially not when Lachlan was so vulnerable beside me and I had no idea what was going on outside the little room.

It was a few minutes before I started humming to myself, my chest vibrating in a soothing motion that quickly sent Lachlan into a deeper sleep than before. I felt his fear fading as I continued my tune, a little smile on his face as he slept.

It was comforting to know that he wasn't afraid, that he didn't have anything to fear in his sleep. I carded my hand through his soft blonde hair, bringing him close to my body and hoping he stayed asleep because if he woke, he would have to face the terror.

Wish that you could build a time machine
So you could see
The things no one can see
Feels like you're standing on the edge
Looking at the stars
And wishing you were them

The song was sung under my breath, the remnants of some long forgotten tune in the back of my mind. It was comforting for me and evidently more so for Lachlan because he completely relaxed against me, going limp in my arms.

‪What do you do when a chapter ends?‬
‪Do you close the book and never read it again?‬
‪Where do you go when your story's done?‬
‪You can be who you were or who you'll become
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh oh, if it all goes wrong
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh oh, darling just hold on

He started to stir just after I started hearing noises upstairs, footsteps, voices. At first I thought that I was imagining it but after a few minutes of talking and movement I knew that my brain couldn't be making up that sort of sound.

"Hey Lachy, it's okay, you're okay." His eyes found mine in the dark, the trembling already beginning anew. He was scared.

‪The sun goes down and it comes back up
‪The world it turns no matter what
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh oh, if it all goes wrong
Darling, just hold on

The silence was heavy. It weighed on my shoulders and back, forcing me to the ground. Lachlan was curled up against me, his fist firmly up against his mouth and at first I thought he was sucking his thumb for comfort, but when I moved I saw the teeth marks on his knuckles and fingers.

"Hey, hey, no don't bite your hand." He whimpered but continued to sink his teeth into his hand, the pain grounding him in the world around him.

I gave up after a little while, leaning up against the wall and pulling him into me. He was shivering, blinking too fast and just genuinely terrified but there was nothing that I could do considering that I couldn't even comfort myself.

I wasn't sure how much time had passed, maybe hours, maybe days. All I knew was that Lachlan slept most of the time, never speaking and just clinging to me when he was awake with trembling hands. I rarely spoke either, my throat was dry and my voice was hoarse.

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh oh, darling, just hold on
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh oh

"Robby?" Lachlan was looking up at me with wide, scared, eyes. "Are we going to die here?"

His voice was so small and innocent that my heart ached. I leaned down and kissed him gently, his eyes wide and starting to fill with tears that I could barely see in the dark.

"I don't know Lachlan." I was trying not to freak him out but I honestly didn't know if we would die in the cold, damp box of concrete. It was a possibly considering nothing had changed in what felt like days and with no water, death was close.

It's not over 'til it's all been said
‪It's not over 'til your dying breath
‪So what do you want them to say when you're gone?‬
‪That you gave up or that you kept going on?‬

Lachlan was silent. He didn't have the strength to talk anymore. He could hardly lift his head from my chest when I got up to walk around and stretch my muscles but as the hours passed I found that I couldn't stand either and just slumped against the wall.

I was exhausted and dehydrated and it didn't take long before I could hardly move either. Lachlan hadn't shifted in hours even though he was awake, his eyes half closed, curled up on his side with his head on my chest. His head nodded onto his chest.

It was when he started slipping that I tried everything to get him to stay awake but I knew it was no use. I could hardly keep my own eyes open so I didn't blame him but it worried me that he couldn't even open his eyes properly because of his lack of energy.

I struggled weakly into a sitting position, pulling Lachlan with me but to my complete and utter horror he collapsed sideways, mewling weakly. He couldn't even open his eyes and just slumped against the wall as my fumbling hands desperately grabbed at him for a reaction.

"Lachlan? Please Lachlan?! No, no, wake up!" With one last forced effort he cracked open his eyes, his cracked and nearly bleeding lips giving me a good idea of how he was feeling. He moaned quietly, his fingers barely moving.

He was dying. We both were.

I could barely move. There was barely any energy left in my body and I couldn't lift my head from the ground, even breathing seemed too much effort for my body.

Lachlan was motionless, his chest no longer rising or falling in the motion that told me of his life. He had stopped moving a few hours before, the life fading from him peacefully while he slept so I knew he hadn't felt anything. His face was peaceful, no longer burdened with life.

"I love you Lachy." I whispered, using the last of my strength to pledge a promise to someone I knew would ever hear me.

"I love you."

Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh oh
If it all goes wrong, darling just hold on.
