"If we must part together, give me one kind word to think upon, and please myself with, while my heart's breaking." –Thomas Otway
Gabriella
Today was the day. The day I would bid my last goodbye to James.
After I had finished my shift at the café, I delayed my arrival home by walking on the busy streets of New York. I wanted to avoid coming home to an empty place, but sooner or later I would have to face the loneliness that awaited me.
The familiarity that was once there had disappeared. Only to leave me with an unpleasant welcoming. And while I had forgotten the feeling of loneliness, I slowly embraced it because that was how I had spent my life before I met James. It was nothing new to me.
Checking my phone, it signaled 1: 47 p.m. I had to be at the cemetery by 2:30 therefore, I had to leave soon.
This morning I had woken up from a dream about him. It was about the promise I made him. A promise that I would never end up fulfilling.
I new that the guilt would torment me, but it was either that or ruining someone else's life.
Not wasting any more time I got up from the couch and grabbed the keys and my coat and left the apartment. I needed to go to a flower shop to buy a few flowers for him.

Getting out from the car I headed to the small flower shop in front of me.
As I opened the door, the bells jingled and I heard a small "welcome" from the man behind the counter. Every where I looked I saw flowers of different colors.
Looking around I meditated on my decision. It was hard to pick out of all the flowers in the store. Walking around I was about to give up and just grab a bouquet of Gardenias when something bright caught the side of my eye. Looking to my left I saw a group of yellow flowers. Walking closer to the stand I leaned down to read the name tag, "Daffodil flowers" it read. I grabbed a bouquet of them and gazed at them closely. Something about those flowers caught my attention but I could not point exactly what it was.
Eventually I opted on choosing the Daffodil flowers. Walking to the register, the man stopped fixing the flowers and walked towards the register. "Hello ma'am." He started.
"Hello sir." I responded.
"Hmmm, you chose the Daffodil flowers. You know to some people these flowers represent new beginnings." The man said as he was rapping them in a white type of paper.
"Really?, do people usually buy this type of flowers?" I asked surprised at what he told me.
"People usually buy them during the new years, since its a new year and therefore a new beginning to start over." He said and I nodded my head in response.
"That will be $5.20." He says and I grabbed my debit card. Swiping it slowly until I heard the beep. Inserting my pin I let the machine process it until I the receipt.
"Here you go, have a good day." He said handing me the flowers.
"You too sir." I replied back.
Leaving the store I walked back to the car. Unlocking the door I opened the driver's seat and got it. Placing my bag and flowers on the drivers seat. Checking the time on my phone it read 2:13. I had 17 minutes left.
