Mason’s POV

Since yesterday, I can’t seem to wipe this silly grin off my face. I woke up early this morning just so I can pick up Blondie from their house and spend a little time together before going to school. We agreed to not tell our friends yet of our relationship? Or that we’re dating until our actual first date which is on Saturday.

When we got to school, I walked her to her first period and carried her books for her. Literature became my favorite class because that’s the one class that I have with Blondie. Our teacher was in a bad mood today so I couldn’t talk to her. Well, you didn’t think I’d give up that easily didn’t you? I found a different way to talk to her which is… drum roll…. Passing notes! Yes I know that it sounds cliché but hey, a man’s got to do what a man’s got to do.

Lunch was interesting, James was a bit off; he was quiet the whole time. Tyler and Jessica are at war so they’re not talking. Andy, Blondie and Josh are arguing about a movie I’ve never heard of and Erica’s Erica.

“Must be some fight huh?” I asked Tyler as we walked to our next class.

“Do you remember Natalie?” he replied.

“Yeah.” She’s Tyler’s ex-girlfriend.

“I saw her yesterday.”

“She’s back?” I asked. Natalie went to live with her Dad in Atlanta after the divorce.

“Apparently.” He sighed. “I’m so stupid! I should’ve told Jessica I’m meeting her instead of lying.”

“What’d you tell her?”

“I was going to a debate meeting.” He mumbled.

“You are stupid.” I chuckled. “Just apologize to her.”

“I already did, but she’s still not talking to me.”

“Give it time, she’ll cool off eventually.” I patted his shoulder.

“What’s gotten into you?” He asked.

“You’re being me. Full of words of wisdom and relationship shit.” He chuckled. “Wait, are you…? And Chloe…?” he eyed me.

“Nothing official yet.” I shrugged.

“You asshole!” he punched me in the shoulder and laughed. “Did you tell James?”

“Actually we haven’t told anyone yet, so keep your mouth shut.”

“Dude, you have to tell him, he needs to know. You owe it to him. You wouldn’t want history to repeat itself don’t you?”

“I hate it when you’re right.” I groaned.

 “James.” I called him.

We’re currently running laps at the field as part of football training.

“What’s up?” he asked.

“I need to tell you something.” I said and stopped running.

“Okay.” He shrugged and stopped too. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah, everything’s fine. I uh… thought you should know.” I cleared my throat. “Blondie and I are dating.”

His feature changed from being concerned to somewhat unreadable, he’s wearing his poker face now.

“James?” I asked.

“Yeah, sure…” He responded.

“I just thought you should know.”

“Yeah, yeah, of course… You don’t need my permission.”

I was about to say something else but he already left and continued to run. Well I did my job, I told him the truth. After a few more laps, coach told us to change to our uniform and we’ll have a practice game today. He divided us into two and James is on the opposing team. After we heard the whistle, the game started.

Football is a brutal game; you must have strength so that you wouldn’t be knocked easily down by your opponent. James is a good at defense which means tackling other player’s so they wouldn’t score and I, well, I’m the quarterback. I noticed that whenever I have the ball, James is the one that’s attacking me. He always knocks himself at me. I know this is a game but it’s a friendly game, this game is just to practice our skills.

At first I shrugged it off, this happens to games like this and I’m not a pussy or a crybaby but I’m the type of person that notices when someone is intentionally hurting me.

“What’s your problem?” I asked him. I’m starting to get pissed off.

“What? Can’t take a hit?” he challenged something about the tone of his voice made me irate. This is how he wants it to be huh? So be it.

When the next quarter started, I changed my role and opted to be on defense and returned the hits he gave; I knocked him over and over and over again. Our teammates know that something’s up and just lets us be. They know it’s for the best.

We heard a whistle followed by our coach’s voice. “Carter! Dean! What the hell is going on?” he yelled.

“Nothing coach!” we yelled back and gave him a smile.

As the last quarter started, we gave it our all, if you don’t know that this is a practice game, you would think this is a real game by the way we play. James tackles me every chance he gets. By the end of the game, our team won and I scored a touchdown.

“James.” I called him; we’re on our way back to the gym to take a shower. He didn’t respond. “James!” I called him louder. “I’m talking to you!” he stopped and faced me. “What the hell was that?!”

“What was what?” He asked innocently.

“Don’t play dumb with me Dean; you know what I’m talking about.”

“It’s a game Mason, things happen.” He shrugged. The way he emphasized the word ‘game’ I knew he’s talking about something else.

“This is about Blondie huh?”

“You don’t even call her by her name.” he scoffed. “Is this about Maggie? You’re getting revenge? Just tell me because it’s not funny, Chloe’s different Mason.”

I laughed bitterly. “You think this is me getting revenge? I’ve moved on from Maggie, I was young and naïve back then.”

“Have you?” he raised a brow. “Have you forgotten how she chose me over you? Why she left you? Have you… forgotten?”

“I didn’t, but that has nothing to do with Blondie. I know you’re upset which is why you’re bringing up the past. James, you’re my friend, I told you the truth because I didn’t want to lie to you.” He didn’t budge. “Okay… Talk to me when you’ve cooled down.” And with that, I walked away.

I know telling James would be tricky. I know that he’d bring up Maggie. But that’s not important, the important thing is I told him the truth.

I didn’t lie to him.

Like he did to me.

A/N: Sort of a filler chapter guys! I want you to know a little bit something about their history before Chloe. Can you feel the tension between them? Tell me what you think... Vote and Comment!
