Leaf did not sleep well that night, and in the morning, he awoke with the hardest decision of his life. Run away and abandon his friends? Or try and save one and possibly die? He decided immediately he couldn't run away. But who should he save? Amber and Typhoon were out of the question, Typhoon had always semmed ordinary to him and Amber was extremely injured. Blizzard was a good fighter, but they couldn't beat Cloud in a fight. Scorch was smart, but Leaf didn't know. Comet...no. But Coal might work. SkyWings were good fighters, he knew the most about Cloud, and who knew what might happen? So Leaf headed up to the clearing with his friends, still chained.
Nobody was talking. Leaf hoped Cloud hadn't enchanted them, but they just looked depressed.
Leaf stepped up to Coal, took a deep breath, and fired a stream of venom that melted the chains and freed Coal. He gasped.
"Leaf," the SkyWing whispered. "Is that you?"
Leaf let a small outline of his scales shimmer into existence. He nodded.
"We have to get out of here," Coal whispered. "Now!"
Just then, Leaf heard Scorch's alarmed shout. "Where's Coal?"
There came the sound of clanking chains. It seemed the others had become alert.
"As weird as this is going to sound," Leaf hissed. "I have to cover you so Cloud can't see you."
Coal shrugged. "As long as it works."
Leaf wrapped around Coal with his wings just as they heard Blizzard yelp.
"Where's Coal?" Cloud demanded. Leaf skirted around a tree so they could see. The SkyWing was standing in the clearing, fangs bared, claws scraping the earth.
"I don't know," Amber stuttered. "He was here five minutes ago." She sounded sick. Leaf's heart twisted.
Cloud touched his head for a moment and muttered something at a pebble. He groaned.
Did he enchant that to see if Amber was lying? Leaf wondered.
"I enchant this pond to show me Coal of the SkyWings right now," Cloud said. The pond shimmered, but showed nothing. Leaf couldn't help but smile, the camo had worked.
Cloud screeched at the lake. "That's impossible! Bring me Coal right now!"
Coal vanished from underneath Leaf and reappeared in the clearing. Leaf darted in that direction.
"Oh, shut up!" Coal yelled in frustration.
And then.
Cloud.
His snout snapped shut.
Leaf darted into the clearing and froze.
