A/N: so sorry for the delay! We're on retreat rn, and I'm sneaking my phone in, lmao.

Even as a kid, I've never had a habit of biting my nails. However, that bad habit seemed to be forming quickly.

I chewed on my nails anxiously, as I watched Magnus work his magic. He sighed. "It's not working. I'm sorry." He said. "Parabatai bonds are like a tether that binds two souls. Jace and Alec share emotions, instincts, strength. It's an angelic bond. My magic can only do so much."

"So Jace is like this, too?" Izzy asked.

"Not necessarily. It appears that when Alec called out to him, part of his soul never returned." Magnus replied. "Now he's stuck, lost somewhere between himself and his parabatai."

My eyes widened. "But if Jace brought back that missing piece of his soul..."

"We may very well have the cure." Magnus confirmed.

"Whatever we do, we need to do it quickly." Izzy said. She turned to us. "You two stay with Alec. I'll go find Jace."

I picked up his hand again, pressing a kiss to each knuckle as Magnus worked his magic beside me.

"Please hold on," I whispered.

Footsteps echoed from outside the room, but I paid no heed to them. I was just focused on helping Magnus by lending my energy to him. "Had they been in there with Alec the whole time?" Clary asked, surprised. Look who's back.

"He's the only reason Alec still has a chance." Izzy replied quietly. "But his magic can't last forever. Sooner or later, he's gonna burn out."

Izzy shuts the door and I went back to assisting Magnus, who only sent me a small smile, "trust me, buttercup. He'll wake up."

"Best team. Best team." Magnus and I sprang up upon hearing Alec's voice. My eyes watered when I saw he was still in unconscious.

Magnus ran his magic over Alec, blue flame dancing across his face. "It's okay, Alec. You hear me?" He asked. "We're gonna get you out of here and bring you back."

"You put in a request to transfer Alec to Idris?" Aldertree asked, storming into the room.

I scowled at him. "Maryse and Robert put in the request."

"Alec isn't leaving this institute." Aldertree said. "I'm sure his warlock friend can figure something out. Here."

"This isn't waking Sleeping Beauty with a kiss." Magnus argued. "Runic power is deep. It requires magic that can't be accessed in the walls of this institute."

Aldertree gave us a suspicious look. "I don't know what you're up to, and, ultimately, I don't care." He said. "But as far as I'm concerned, your brother is too weak to be portaled."

"You're just using Alec as bait to arrest Jace." Izzy spat.

"No, I'm working to capture the fugitive who put Alec in this position." Aldertree replied. Unfortunately, I don't believe in bullshit. "I have allowed this warlock into the Institute for the sole purpose of treating your brother. Although, you don't seem to be doing too good a job of it." He turned to Magnus, as if he was mocking him.

I gaped at him, just as Aldertree continued, "I'm placing Raj by the door. Do not try this again."

"I'm just under orders." Raj defended.
