The doorbell rang for the hundredth time, making me bury my face deeper into my pillow.
I wished whoever was at the door would just give up and go away, but it seemed like they were getting more and more impatient by the second.
It had been a week since I last saw Cody and I'd been a complete mess. I lost my appetite, I hadn't been getting enough sleep, and I had missed some of my classes at college too. I stayed up late last night so I was hoping to get some sleep this morning, but the damn doorbell wouldn't stop ringing!
Since it was Monday, my parents went to work early in the morning. I guess I don't have a choice then. Groaning and whining to my self, I got out of my bed, stumbled into the bathroom and washed my face before rushing down the stairs.
I opened the front door to be faced with a guy around my age, standing there looking like he was ready to murder someone. But I'm sure I looked just as scary at the moment. I am a morning person, just not when I'm sleep deprived.
He was a few feet taller than me, had dark brown eyes and slightly darker hair. I rubbed my eyes to focus on him, adjusting to the bright sunlight.
"Uh-can I help you?" I questioned, ready to slam the door shut and go back to sleep if he had the wrong address.
"I'm looking for Lucas," he said in a gravelly low voice.
"Uh-yeah, he's my brother but he doesn't live here anymore..." I said, a bit intimidated by his glare.
He remained silent for a moment and I furrowed my brows in confusion. "Are you guys friends or something?"
I noticed his blank expression and tried to explain. "I mean he moved out two weeks ago so... I thought you should've known that by now if you're friends."
"No, we're not," he replied looking back to the road. "Can you give me his address? I need to talk to him."
As much as I wanted him to leave right then, I knew that giving my brother's address to a complete stranger wasn't the right thing to do. "Um...I don't know where his apartment is, but I can give you his phone number if you want."
"Yeah, I'll call him."
I asked for his phone, dialed Luke's number and handed it back to him.
"Thanks," he said quietly, a lot more calmer now.
"No problem..." I drifted off and he held his hand out for me to shake.
"Adam."
"Paige."
As soon as he turned to leave, I shut the door and headed upstairs to my room. I crawled into my warm bed wanting to go back to sleep, but I kept worrying about what that guy wanted from my brother. He looked furious for some reason so maybe I shouldn't have given him his phone number.
After a few minutes, I gave up and got out of my bed, went into the bathroom and took a quick shower.
I brushed my teeth before getting dressed in black jeans and a T-shirt. I didn't like wearing dresses but Cody always made me wear them to our dates. So I now have a few unwanted clothes I'll never wear again...
