Hello, and welcome to The Young Adult! We are a group account created to support the Young Adult community here on Wattpad.
The YA genre of writing has been hugely popular of late, from the good old days of Twilight (said no one, ever), to the dystopian era of The Hunger Games, to the current trends of thrilling fantasies and diverse contemporary novels. It's a broad genre that encompasses many different styles, but whether you want to be the next Sarah J. Maas or the next John Green, The Young Adult has something for everyone.
Well, maybe not everyone. Some of y'all are kind of kinky.
We want to help the YA community on Wattpad not only to improve, but to receive the recognition and encouragement it needs to take its writers to the very top. We're in the beginning stages right now, but we plan to host contests and competitions, provide critiques and reviews, and hopefully even collab with some other group accounts.
Now, you may be wondering
WHAT QUALIFIES AS YOUNG ADULT?
We're so glad you asked!
Just kidding. It's way simpler than that! For your work to be considered YA, you must have at least one main, POV character between the ages of 13 and 19. Now we know age isn't all cut and dry in some novels. Maybe your main character starts off at 12, but turns 13 later on in the book, and you're thinking "Hey, I qualify!"
13 is the minimum, kiddies, and that's still pretty young for a young adult novel. If at any point in the main novel plot (flashbacks and prologues excluded) your character is younger than 13, your work does not count as YA. Sorry!
Now what about if your character starts off as a 19-year-old, and later on in the plot turns ancient, grizzled, practically-dead-already 20?
Technically, we say your story still falls in the YA guidelines ('cause let's face it, guys, 20-year-olds are not much more mature). However, this age range is typically more common in New Adult stories, so if this is true of your main character, we may not be the right fit for you.
But what about those of you who are writing an epic, 8-novel series that spans the course of the main character's life from birth to death?
Asdfl;jkasdf;lkj what more do you want from me?
Genre rules are not as cut-and-dry as we'd like them to be. The typical YA novel will be character-driven and see the main character grow and develop along the plot of the novel. If you're not sure whether your novel counts, feel free to ask! Comment below, or message us, and we'll have someone check your story out and tell you whether or not it fits in with our guidelines.
Until then, follow us to be notified of our updates and stay tuned for more awesome content to follow!
