Long chapter ahead!
"Any word from the Clave?" Isabelle asked.
"Not yet, and we've been trying for the past four hours." Lydia, who was now recovered, replied.
I shook my head. "Something's up."
"Mmm, the Clave being unhelpful?" Magnus tsked. "Who's shocked? Show of hands?"
Alec sighed. "I'm worried." My hand found his and squeezed it in assurance. "I can't sense Jace through our parabatai bond."
"We'll find him, Alexander." Magnus assured him.
"When we arrested Hodge, he said Valentine was on a ship." Alec said.
"They must still be over water." I nodded.
"Pull up the waterways around New York. The ship couldn't have gone too far." Alec ordered. Lydia did as he asked. "Anything?"
Lydia examined the waterways. "Nothing. I'm sorry."
"There's got to be something!" He exclaimed, voice raising. I squeezed his hand.
"I don't see him." Lydia told him.
Alec then faced the whole Institute. "Alright, listen up!" He shouted urgently. "I want 24/7 monitoring of the Hudson and East Rivers. If you see anything unusual, you come to me first."
Lydia gave him a look. "I've got this, Alec."
"Then why haven't you found Jace yet?" He asked angrily with a hint of desperation.
"Don't forget who you're talking to." Lydia frowned at Alec. "I am still the head of this institute."
"And my brother is still missing!" Alec stated angrily.
"Why don't you just take a break?" Izzy said softly.
Alec dismissed his sister almost immediately. "Not now, Izzy."
"Isabelle's right, and it's not a request." Lydia stepped in. "You're dismissed."
"Fine!" He snapped.
I attempted to console him by putting my hand on his shoulder. "Hey." Alec only shrugged me off, looking annoyed.
I'll admit, that kinda hurt.
"Everybody, just back off!" He exclaimed before walking away.
"Ames, he didn't mean it." Izzy said.
I sighed. "I know."
I finished the leftover pizza in the fridge. To say I was annoyed would be an understatement. Why the hell did they add too many olives and pineapples?
My worst nightmare.
Suddenly, my phone beeped, and I got a text, saying that there was a briefing in the OPs Center.
"We are at war." Were Maryse Lightwood's first words as she stood in front of everyone. "Valentine now has the Mortal Cup, with which he is, no doubt, raising a new army, and one of our own has joined him."
I looked at her in disbelief. She raised Jace as if he was her own. How could she say that he joined the monster's side?
"Looks like the queen's taking back her kingdom." Izzy whispered.
"As a result, the Clave has declared a state of emergency at the Institute. Their first priority is to replace the current leadership, who they have deemed wholly ineffectual." She breathed out. "It is an honor to introduce the newly appointed head of the New York Institute, Clave representative, Victor Aldertree." She announced. Although Maryse said it was honor, anyone worth a damn would see past her facade.
