They Call It Happiness

they call it happiness

she helped me

the yelling

the torment

the hurt

is no more

the pain

the tears

the isolation

is gone

the cracking

the breaking

the crumbling

a feeling

grows inside me

as I pick up the pieces

of myself

that had once been

lost in the sea of people

it pulls at my lips

tugs at my eyelids

scratches inside

and burns

and bleeds

and blooms

and stays.

I don't know the feeling well.

eyes and lips that were once

closed and silent

fill with noise and they

see.

they see me

peeking through the barrier

that keeps us

apart and

protects drew

creeping through the averted

gazes that now look at

me

they don't look away

when our eyes connect.

they don't become quiet

when drew appears.

they come closer

and the barrier that kept me

from them for years

is now them

keeping drew from

me

tears fall down my cheeks

and I know that feeling

well

but these aren't

tears of pain

this is something else

something I had almost

forgotten

this feeling

they call it

happiness

this is my reality.
