I took Lily to Addie's house.
It was the first place I thought of that we could both go to and not run into trouble.
After walking away from Nick and his psychopathic self, Lily and I trudged through the woods to the little cabin. She didn't speak to me the whole time and when I glanced at her, I could tell she was grateful, yet embarrassed that I had been a witness to Nick's "punishment".
When I knocked on the cabin's door, no one answered so I took it upon myself to look for a spare key, hoping Ms. Styles wouldn't mind us breaking in.
After getting a fire started, Lily promptly looked down at the worn sofa and collapsed onto it. Five minutes later, her soft snores could be heard from the chair I sat in nearby.
I sighed. I was nowhere near sleep. I was angry with Nick and yet at the same time, I knew I really couldn't do anything about it. It was just like me and my father. Except, I don't think that Nick is as cruel as my dad. Frustrated, I blew a piece hair away from my face and much to my dismay and annoyance, found myself thinking about Harry.
Maybe I could tell him.
I immediately pushed that thought out of my head, only to bring it back a second later. What would happen if he knew? He already suspects something is going on.
I glance at Lily. She looks so peaceful and calm. Nothing like she looked when she was with Nick. Her clothes are barely enough to give her proper warmth during the winter. Thin t-shirt, jeans and flip-flops.
Just like me.
Getting up, I look out the window. Snow flurries are falling gently to the ground and I have a sudden impulse to go out and catch one on my tongue. I quietly open and shut the front door and step outside.
I've caught several snowflakes when I get the feeling that someone is watching me. I close my mouth and look around. Turning back towards the house I see the curtain move and know that Lily was watching.
I go back inside and find her sitting up on the sofa, hands resting on her stomach and I sit next to her.
"How are you feeling?" I ask her. The circles underneath her eyes have faded a bit.
"Better." she looks up at me, "Why did you help me Jessie?"
I grasp for words, "Because….you needed help."
She shakes her head.
"You don't even know me," she says softly. "If you'd known some of the things I've done, you wouldn't have been so keen to help."
I look her in the eye, "We've all done things we're not proud of, Lily."
She starts to cry and I immediately don't know what to do. I awkwardly put my hand on her back and gently pat her and tell her 'it's going to be all right'.
"No, you don't understand, Jessie," she says wiping away tears, all the while her other hand is resting on her stomach, almost as if….
I sit up, startled, "Lily, are you pregnant?"
This brings on a fresh wave of tears and only confirms my question.
"He said he would be there…he promised he would help me take care of the baby…." She blubbers.
The opening of the front door startles us both, causing me to say a few choice words.
"What the hell is going on here?"
"Do you just pop up everywhere I go, Harry, 'cause I'm starting to think you just make it your job to stalk me," I say angrily.
I stand up and step outside the cabin, likewise, he follows.
"What are you talking about? This is my house, Jess. At least it was the last time I checked."
"Look, I'm sorry but this was the only place I knew to go to that I'd be safe in, and my friend needed help."
He frowns, "What do you mean 'be safe in'?"
"Wait," I say, "You live here? I thought Ms. Styles and Addie…."my words trailed off.
"Are my mom and sister," he chuckles.
I feel like an idiot now.
His face turns serious again, "What did you mean be safe Jessie?"
I turn away from him, "Your mom and sister took care of me a couple of days ago, when I needed some help. I brought Lily here because she didn't have a place to go and…"
"What about your house?" he asks honestly and I know he's not being rude, just curious.
I shake my head, "My dad doesn't like me to have friends over."
"What do you mean?"
"Exactly what I said Harry, so butt out!"
I turn to go back inside and he takes hold of my wrist, the broken one. I cry out.
Suddenly he slides my sleeve up and takes in the sight of my wrist. Bruised and Purplish, yet better than it was before.
"What…." Harry starts to say, but is interrupted by Lily appearing at the door, makeup smeared.
I take that moment and use my good arm to pull the other out of Harry's grasp, wincing in pain.
"Jessie, I have to get home soon," she says, "My mom will need me to fix dinner for the kids."
She steps out with her thin arms wrapped around herself while Harry steps inside, momentarily leaving us. When he comes back, he has a woman's black coat in his hands.
"Here," he says, giving it to Lily, "My mom has been meaning to get rid of this coat for a while now. She would be glad to know it went to someone who needed it."
Lily takes the coat and puts it on, eyes wide at discovering its warmth and that she's no longer shivering.
Harry pulls me aside before we leave, Lily having already started walking.
"We will talk about this Jessie," he says looking at me, worry evident in his eyes, "Meet me here tomorrow morning at eleven."
I say nothing as I walk away, frightened by the thought that I might actually want to tell him everything. Scared that I can no longer block out the feelings I have developed for this beautiful, green-eyed boy.
I resolve to worry about that all tomorrow.
