| A QUICK AUTHOR'S NOTE |
Welcome to the world of (Not So) Sweet Switch, where you'll find out what it's like to walk in someone else's shoes/with someone else's pancreas (it'll make sense later, I promise 😉). This book was inspired by my own struggles with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), an autoimmune condition that causes the pancreas to be unable to produce enough insulin, which the body requires to turn carbohydrates from food into energy and to control glucose levels in your blood. Since being diagnosed, I've noticed just how lacking education is on this condition, and many chronic conditions/invisible struggles, to be frank.
I wanted to do something to share more about T1D and to show those touched by T1D that they're never alone. It can be a scary way to live, and I know that it helped me more than I can ever say to come into contact and have support from others struggling with T1D and other chronic illnesses. In a time when I was coming to grips with my new life and completely terrified about what it meant for my future, that support saved me.
So thank you from the bottom of my heart to all those who have been there for me through this change: my parents, my friends, my readers, my T1D family near and far. Your support has meant more than I can ever express.
This book is really about invisible struggles and empathy. We all have so much more in common than we think most of the time; sometimes we just need little reminders to stop and think about that when we interact with others. So I hope that you enjoy this book whether T1D touches your life or not, because, although it does focus on a lot of issues surrounding T1D as the story unfolds, it's about so much more than that.
