Harry clumsily stumbled over his own feet as he tried to slow dance by himself. His arms and hands were outstretched into the correct placements, but he was still having trouble moving his feet in the right direction. Based off of everything Ron had told him, slow dancing was supposed to be extremely intimate and sweet. If Harry was going to slow dance with his girlfriend (Y/N), he'd have to do a lot better than what he was doing now.
(Y/N)'s birthday was tonight and he wanted to do something special with her - just the two of them. He had planned on sneaking out of Hogwarts and taking her to Hogsmeade, where they could have a private dinner and some alone time they haven't been able to get for a while now; but ever since Umbridge became headmistress, he couldn't take the chance of getting caught and being expelled - especially when she had the the Inquisitorial Squad on everyone's asses.
So instead Harry kicked everyone out of (Y/N)'s dorm room for the night and had dimmed the lights whilst strategically placing candles around the room to give it a kind of soft glow. Fred and George lent him a Muggle stereo that Harry could use for the night; and when he tried to ask them where it came from, the twins just smiled at him and said, "We have our connections."
So now here he was, practicing how to slow dance like the clumsy, adorable romantic that he is. But as soon as he noticed what time it was, he rushed down to the common room to find his love curled up on the couch adorably. A blanket was thrown over her warm body and her cheeks turned a light shade of pink as she laughed with her friends about the party she had earlier that night.
Harry slowly approached (Y/N) and knelt down in front of her, giving her an adorable kiss on the nose. Her friends "aww"-ed in jealousy as he picked her up and hugged her. Even though it was difficult to see, (Y/N) heavily blushed in the light of the fire and excused herself from her friends.
"Am I getting my surprise now?" she whispered in his ear.
Harry smiled back at her and nodded, throwing an arm around her shoulder and kissing her temple.
As soon as they reached (Y/N)'s room, Harry opened the door and ushered her inside. The sight of the romantically dimmed room with the candles left her breathless, in awe and wonder. Her eyes took in the scenery piece by piece - there was no way she was going to be wasting this moment.
(Y/N) turned around and smiled brightly at her boyfriend, "You did this for me?"
Harry awkwardly scratched the back of his neck and gave her a dimpled smile, "Uh - er, yeah."
She carelessly dropped the blanket on her bed and swayed over to Harry, draping her arms around his neck. "What are we doing then?"
Harry eyes twinkled as he looked down at her lovingly. "You know how you always said you just wanted to have a night where we could just...be together? No one else but the two of us?"
(Y/N) blinked and nodded. "Yes."
Harry pecked her cheek and reached behind her to turn on the stereo. "This is going to be one of those nights."
Soft music notes flowed from the speakers and she recognized the song instantly. To her, Iris is one of the greatest love songs ever written and Harry couldn't agree more.
He took one hand in his and placed the other on her lower back, his mind trying to remember the steps he was taking earlier. She seemed a little confused, but nevertheless she went along with it. However, she immediately stopped him when she stepped on his toe.
"Hold on a second." (Y/N) giggled out, "This isn't working."
"Sure it is." Harry replied quickly, already worried that he somehow ruined the night with his terrible dancing.
"Here. Let me show you how it's done.", she giggled. Immediately, she pulled his hands to rest on the small of her back. Her arms draped lazily around his neck.
She spoke at a level that was barely above a whisper, "Pull me close." Harry obliged immediately, pulling her into him so that their chests barely touched. He did a sharp intake of breath as she stepped closer to him, making his heart race all the more.
"This next part's easy.", she whispered with their noses barely touching, "Just...sway. From side to side. Move your feet lightly, no huge steps."
Harry gulped and started to move, swaying softly to the rhythm of the music. She smiled as she stared up at him and blushed when he kissed her temple and softly kissed her plush lips.
Harry pulled away to look at her in the soft glow of candlelight.
"You're so beautiful." he murmured with the softest of tones, "God damn it you're beautiful."
She blushed harder and pecked his lips before resting her head into the crook of his neck. There she placed a few soft kisses to the skin of his neck, making him gulp and blush heatedly.
"Thank you." she whispered to him, "This is the best present anyone could have ever given me."
"I love you." he breathed out, still holding on to her like she was a fragile china doll - something that needed to utmost care and love.
"Please don't ever forget that I love you." he whispered hoarsely.
She gulped and thought of the hard times that were to come ahead. But despite of what was going to come in the future, she knew that her love for Harry could never change, as it would never change for him.
"I won't. I love you too much to forget that."
Harry smiled and noticeably relaxed. In this moment, Harry was the happiest he had been in a long time.
