It was a dreary night in rural North Carolina, the rain hitting the tin roof of the mobile home he lived in. Not an unfamiliar sound of a North Carolina summer. The rain was peaceful yet unnerving. Alex was sleeping after a long day of school and work. He was awoken by the sound of thunder. He looked around the dimly lit room in panic, he had been having a terrible dream. As his eyes came into focus he looked over to the other side of his room and saw his younger brother. Much to his surprise he seemed to be asleep. Often times his brother couldn't fall asleep during storms like this. "Hey, Adrian you asleep?" Called Alex as he slowly got out of bed, to his surprise his brother was fast asleep. "Hmm, that sure don't happen often" Alex said in an almost incredulous tone. Finding that his brother was asleep he checked his phone, the clock read 3:58am. "Gosh, I hate when I can't sleep." Alex checked his messages and decided to check the weather. Instead of a weather forecast he got a mandatory announcement. "This message is to bring to your attention that the virus we have been tracking throughout the United States has become deadly, we have decided your best chance of survival is to stay in shelter until we can give further instruction". "Oh my Lord." Alex said with fear in his voice as he read the message. "What should I do? should I tell my parents?" He decided to wait till morning, nothing should go wrong before then. He awoke to screams, blood curdling screams. He opened his eyes to the sight of Adrian leaned over his bed. His bedroom door was opened, just slightly. The crack let in enough light to see Adrian's face, he was gone. The breath of life sucked out of him. Alex got out of bed, he moved silently to his door and quickly opened it. As he proceeded down the hallway to the living room he noticed broken glass, the front door had been smashed in. He was the only one left alive of his family. The storm of the previous night had crawled to a light sprinkle and the eeriness of the early morning had arrived. As the day progressed Alex attempted to cope with the inevitable. He had lost everything in the blink of an eye.
