"Dad?" Jace's voice broke.
"Son." The older Wayland clarified. "Oh, Jace."
I looked around, eyes searching for any immediate threat. "I can't believe it." I muttered. Like everyone, I thought Michael Wayland died.
"How did you find me?" Michael questioned.
"You're dead." Jace said, still not believing. "Valentine killed you. Valentine's here."
Michael shook his head. "No, Jace. It's me." He turned to the two of us, and an unfamiliar feeling settled into my gut. "I'm Michael Wayland. I'm Jace's father. Look, I know what Jace told you, but I've been here for ten years. Valentine took off and left me."
"And Jocelyn Fairchild?" I asked. He took everything but a prisoner. That seemed kind of suspicious.
"He took her with him." He replied. "You two are?"
"I'm Clary, Jocelyn's daughter. And that's Amelia." Clary told him. "Meliorn, the Seelie, told me that he was here with her."
"We should get out of here," I urged. "Quickly. Who knows if an ambush's already on it's way."
"Amelia's right." Jace agreed.
"Valentine's got a standing portal," Michael told us. "Let's go."
Clary watched Jace with an emotion I couldn't understand. "You know, I've never seen him that vulnerable before." I said as we neared the portal.
"I haven't known him that long and I could tell too." Clary replied. Clary sighed. "How do you guys do it?"
"Do what?" I asked with furrowed eyebrows.
"You know, be all cold all the time."
I gave her a small smile before taking a deep breath. "There was this one time. My, uh, grandfather, passed away when I was on a mission. When I got back, I didn't know at first until I saw the tears threatening to spill from my sister's eyes." I paused, "and then she gave me a letter, saying that gramps had written it for me. He said that.....that it was all up to me now, and that I shouldn't hate myself since I was only following orders. But I still wished I could be with him, you know?"
"What did he mean by that it was all up to you, know?" She asked.
"I have no idea." I admitted.
"Let's go." Jace said. And I pushed myself towards the portal.
We ended up at the werewolf headquarters. Luke and Simon were there. Simon claimed Luke was teaching him how to adapt. Good luck with that.
"But why would Valentine tell a prisoner what he was planning to do?" I asked, just as Luke placed a cup of tea in front of me.
I took a sip. Yum. My mind flashed to times Alec would always prepare tea for me. Whenever I was stressed, or came home from a mission, he'd kiss me on the forehead, then say: "I'll make you some tea."
Gosh, he was already acting like a husband.
Amelia, snap out of it. This is Alec Lightwood you're talking about.
"He didn't." Michael replied. "Well, not directly. But he gave me a way to learn all about his plans."
"How?" I asked again.
"He injected me with Downworlder blood. The pain was excruciating. Sometimes I was sick for days." He answered. "But it's not often you got a Shadowhunter to experiment on. So I guess that's why he always stopped short of killing me. But, little by little, I developed enhanced hearing and vision."
