I'm Not Even Trying Anymore

Mackenzie's POV:

The first week of school is over.

One down, thirty-five to go.

Despite my effort I've found myself getting closer to Caitlyn.

She's your average teenage girl. She likes to have a good time, hang with her friends, cares about her studies, and loves her parents. But there's something in her eyes, something I can't possibly figure out just by working on a project with her.

And just as I continue to want to know her, she's begun to ease her way into knowing me. Last Friday I had told her more than anybody else around me knew currently.

The way her eyes bored into mine made me feel more vulnerable than ever before. I'd given this side of myself to her that I hadn't given since Yvonne and it scares me shitless.

It's Wednesday, halfway through the second week of school. As per usual when I walk into the building my eyes land on the brunette girl.

The fitting black sweater she has on hugs her upper body, showing off her curves. A thigh length, light jean skirt makes her legs seem like they go on for miles, which they do. And she ends it off with long black suede boots.

"Kenzie!"

Her bright smile takes over her face. She skips up to me and wraps her arms around my neck.

This is the third time she's hugged me, the first being on Friday before I left her house and the second just on Monday. However, I still find myself freezing at the friendly gesture.

Slowly I wrap an arm around her waist," hi."

When she pulls away she grabs my hand and pulls me to her locker.

"Mack!" Jafar exclaims and jogs from my locker to Caitlyn's.

He's another person who I can't seem to wrap my head around.

My first day here he immediately began to flirt with me but since I shut him down he's been nothing but friendly, persisting his way into my life and fighting to become my friend.

Again, despite my efforts, I've opened up to him briefly as well. My mind tells me that he isn't nearly as bad as I pegged him to be. Comedic is the biggest part of his personality. He finds ways to make me laugh, though at times I find it annoying rather than funny.

He's a good friend.

We don't have friends Mackenzie, too unexpected.

But we'd rather deal with unexpected rather than lonely.

Would we?

I sigh," Jafar I've told you before not to call me that."

"But you let Caitlyn call you Kenzie." He points out.

Trying to fight the blush on my cheeks I look down. But the gasp that drops from Felicity's lips tells me I'm wrong.

"She's blushing." Darcy says, finger coming up and poking my cheek.

Really body, I can't even hone in my chagrin.

I shake my head and walk down to my locker.

They laugh and shout "come back" my way but I don't. I pull my notebook out of my locker and head to class.

Ms.Hawthorne smiles and greets me. Using two fingers, I salute her, and sit down.

We've reached the essay portion of the assignment. Safe to say I'm not at all concerned about it.
