The Sneak Peek:

She hadn't taken her eyes off him as he brushed himself off. Maybe she was in shock. Or thought this all a dream.

"What were those things? Who are you? How'd you know how to kill them?" He took it back. She wasn't in shock. He watched as she dragged her eyes from him to where Emerens walked around her from the other side and back to him.

"Get her out of here while I check the area," Axel snapped at his brother.

"Come on. I'll walk you back home," Emerens called, his voice much calmer than Axel's. Sloane stood where she was, not listening to his younger brother who reached out for her. The moment his hand touched her, she jumped, shrugging him off.

"I'm not going anywhere until you answer my questions," her voice was higher pitched than normal, cheeks flaming. Angry. She was angry. Of all the emotions he'd assumed she'd have, anger wasn't one of them. Fear. Timidity. Nervousness. But not anger. They'd just saved her life after all.

"Rens, get her out of here before..."

"Oh, no you don't. You do not get to tell me to leave. I saved your life after all." She marched up to him, barely reaching his shoulders, one hand on her hip the other jabbing at his chest. Emerens chuckled behind her which caused the scowl on her full lips to deepen.

"You saved my life?" The words tumbled from his lips without thinking. Was she serious? "If we hadn't come along when we had, you'd be..."

"Axel," Rens harsh whisper cut off the rest of his statement, but the girl guessed what he was going to say. A bit of her spunky spirit deflating as the color left her cheeks. Instead of smugness that he was right, it saddened him to see her cower back. He rubbed a hand over his neck, wiping the drool of the beast from him but instead of saliva when he brought his hand down, it was covered in red.
