Trying to avoid all conversations, I tried to rush into the kitchen only for my name to be called. Turning around, I came face to face with Curtis. "How are you Mr. Rodgers?" I held my hand out.
He looked at and laughed. "Let's talk outside."
"Dad, please." Carlee said walking into the kitchen.
"It's okay Carlee." I said before walking to the backyard. We took a seat across from each other.
"So how are you?" He asked.
"Ok, getting better. You?"
"Some days are better than others but I can't complain."
"But you know why I brought you out here right?" He continued.
"Even after everything you've done, my daughter still stuck her neck out to help you, I see."
"She did, even though she shouldn't have and I'll always be in her debt for this."
"Christopher when you hurt my daughter around the time Junior was born, you told me that it would never happen again. I hate when a man looks me in my face and tells a lie. What made you do this to her?"
"I was very unappreciative of what I had. I was dumb and greedy. I didn't want to hurt Carlee but I did. I wish I could take it back but I can't. My only goal is to make things better from here on out and I don't mean getting back together but at least us being cordial or friends. Just want her to be happy."
He nodded. "My daughter deserves to be happy, she's a good woman."
"She most definitely is."
"But a blind man could see that you two still want each other."
I scratched the back of my neck. "It hasn't been that long since we divorced. It's still taking a while for this to fade but it'll happen. She's in another relationship anyway."
"I heard. Kylee calls me and tells me how she doesn't like him."
"She's just used to me and her mom that's all."
"Yeah that could be true. I have to ask though, if Carlee does decide to take you back. How are you going to make this time different from the last?"
"I haven't really thought about that because I think think it's best if Carlee does just move on. She's always going to have that hate in her heart from what I did and that's going to make it hard for me and her to have a stable relationship. As much as I would love to be home with my family and have my wife back. I'm not sure if that's what should happen."
"I understand. But I need a favor."
My eyebrows furrowed. He wanted a favor from me? "What's that?"
"Chris my health is getting the best of me, I've been really sick for a while but to keep the stress off of my children, I've only told my wife about what's going on."
I shifted in my seat. I didn't like the sound of this. "So what's wrong?"
"I have prostate cancer Chris and it's not looking too good. Everything was caught too late."
