"We should have brought her with us, you know that right?" Cameron asks me, knowing that I don't care.

I've never been good with others. Plus I've seen apocalypse movies, all the injured people do is slow people down. Injured people and babies are no goes.

"You could have stayed back there with her if you wanted to. I wasn't going to stop you."

I don't turn to look at him as I say this, I should feel bad about my decision, but I don't. I know I left her to die. I know.

"You're right, maybe the school full of whatever the fuck those things were, would have been safer than with you."

I stop walking and turn to look at him.

He followed me, not the other way around.

"Who the fuck you talking to? I could have left you in that classroom by yourself. I didn't ask for this to happen and neither did you, but whatever it is, has happened and all I'm about to do is find my family and get out of this city. You don't have to come with me. So if all you're going to do is stand here and complain about me leaving her behind, you can leave, I don't have the time for this."

I continue walking.

Maybe I had been a bit rash about my decision to leave Jasmine in the building. After the sound stopped Cameron and I looked around the school to find almost everyone dead. Everyone except Jasmine.

I never liked her, she always had something to say about somebody and wouldn't keep out of everyone's business. Especially mine.

Jasmine never played a sport in her life, I should know, we used to be friends. I've never played any sports either, but my legs weren't injured. We found her at the bottom of the stairs, near the exit, it looked as if she were at the top when the sound started and probably fell when it became too much for her. I didn't really ask, I didn't really care.

Whatever is happening is serious, yes we knew each other but that doesn't mean I'm automatically inclined to save her.

Cameron suggested she come with us, I didn't know it was official that we were a team, but whatever.

I didn't like that idea. She was screaming for help, making way too much noise considering everyone's ears were hurting, and drawing attention.

"Who's there? Dasana, help me! Please, I think I saw something up there!"

"We have to help her, let's carry her out."

He got me fucked up.

"I don't think that's a good idea, she's hurt, she's going to slow us down."

Cameron starts down the stairs. I look behind me and see something I wish I hadn't. It had a human-like form, but the closer it got, the more I could see its face and body.

It had tentacle looking things coming from its back. The eyes were grey with black pupils, and the rest of its face looked melted. It was coming towards us.

"We have to go! Now." I start down the stairs, towards the door.

Cameron isn't very close to her, we could make it out but taking her with us would be suicide. She's injured and talks too much, I'm guessing the sound of her screams drew the thing to us, to her. It's the first time I'm seeing this thing and I can hear the sound that exploded everyone else's heads.

I touch his arm and point to the top of the stairs, the thing is there, with friends. They don't seem to be very fast, but the closer they get the louder the sound gets.

"I know you can hear that too, we have to go, unless you want your head exploded." There's an urgency in my tone that he should have been picked up on when I first started speaking.

I turn my back on them both and start towards the door. I'm not dying for her or him.

"No, Dasana don't leave me!" Jasmine yells, the things turn towards her, and start descending the stairs. I don't glance back, and run out of the building. Cameron is behind me cursing the moon and back.

That's the last time I'm going to think about what happened. There's no need to cry over spilled milk.

"What's wrong with you?" Cameron asks as he stops walking.

How dare he. He clearly has problems within his damn self.

We're human, and inherently selfish. Saving her would've damned me.

"Did you see what I saw? If you weren't willing to leave her, than what's wrong with you? I know why I did what I did, I don't regret it. You could have stayed back, I was only trying to help you. I'm going to find my family and leave, that's all I care about right now. I'm not saying it again, either you stop bitching about what happened back there, or you leave."

I never stopped walking, and he knows he's better off with me, so he keeps walking.

He's being hypocritical right now. I didn't drag him out of the building. He ran with his own two feet. I just saw what needed to be done before he did.

I don't understand why they didn't follow us out of the building.

But like I said, injured people and babies.
