At that very moment, forgetting everything, all Nirav did was hugged Asha tightly letting all his tears drip down his eyes silently. After a few seconds of the warm embrace, he unwillingly broke the hug. His mother wiped the tears off his face and said, "Get freshen up and come for lunch. Food is ready." Saying this she walked away from Nirav to leave the room.
"Mom...", Nirav called from behind.
She turned around to face him waiting for him to say ahead. Pointing tow.ards all the photo frames he asked, "Who did this?"
"I and your father did this. We were missing you a lot. We were going through albums trying to refresh the old memories and then we thought of framing these photographs. And trust me when I say this, we miss Anika too. I won't say that what she did or rather you both did was correct, we are still against it and angry about it, but she is a sweet girl and we miss her being around. So we thought of framing of yours and her picture from your wedding day too." Saying that she left the room leaving Nirav with a thought of reconsidering his decision of joining that band leaving everything behind.
Nirav was caught between a rock and a hard place. The dining table arena was filled with deafening silence, the only noise audible was of the spoons clattering with the plates. Nirav dared to break the silence by saying, "Dad, mom" Vijay looked up at him waiting for him to say further. "I want to tell you something..."
Nirav's statement got an immediate response from his father. "That you were at the US with Anika? Right?"
Nirav remained silent, but his eyes clearly showed the glint of an agreement. "And you thought I won't figure that out?", Vijay asked in a bit louder voice.
Nirav kept his gaze down at his hands trying hard to avoid the argument. "All we expect from you is the truth Nirav. You could have simply told us that you were going to meet Anika, we wouldn't have stopped you from going. But what did you do? You lied."
"Dad, please listen to me once, will you?", Nirav asked pleadingly. Vijay nodded on this but kept looking at him with a straight face.
"There was a reason why I didn't tell you...", saying that, Nirav took a pause trying to decipher what he wanted to say because telling them that Anika lied to him to bring him there would do nothing good but rather antagonize them.
"And what that reason is?", Vijay asked folding his hands over his chest. Nirav's mother chose to be a silent spectator not wanting to jump into the argument and make the situation worse.
"I went there to give audition for the Rock heaven band and I got selected as a lead singer.",Nirav explained.
"So? Why are you telling this to us? If you are here to ask our permission, then you already know my answer.", Vijay answered sternly.
"Why do you always have to be so stubborn dad? Why can't you simply see where I am happy? Why can't you understand that there's no point in forcing your decision on others?", Nirav asked furiously.
"Wow, now you are going to argue with me? And why don't you understand that I tell you what is right and what is wrong! I never force my decisions on others,", Vijay simply stated.
Nirav chuckled disgustingly on Vijay's words. "You know what dad, you won't ever understand. I know you love me, you care for me, but the fact that you always force your decisions on me and ultimately make me do what you want will always hold strong."
When Asha felt that the conversation was slipping out of hands, she jumped into the conversation. "Vijay, try to understand his point of view too, please. He is an adult now and knows what is correct for him."
"Why are you taking his side, Asha? You think I am wrong?", Vijay outraged.
"I am not taking anyone's side. For god's sake Vijay, try to understand him too. I am trying to resolve the problem, that's it.", Asha answered in a louder voice.
Before Vijay could argue more, Nirav spatted, "Okay stop you two. Let me make this very clear to you dad, now. I already took the offer of that band and I am joining in a week. I am here to manage all the stuff of the company by handing over the responsibilities to the responsible people. And yes, I am going against you this time because I really want to be happy in my life. And music makes me happy. I love you both and so does Anika. We do feel bad going against you but you never try to understand us."
"If you had already made up your mind, then why were you even asking for my permission?", Vijay asked in a rigid tone.
"Who said I am here to ask your permission? I know you won't ever agree. I am here to let you know my decision. All these years, I tried my best to understand you both and do whatever pleases you. But for the first time, I am asking you to understand me, please. Also, if you want, you can come and stay with us there. We would be more than happy to have you both with us.", saying that, Nirav stood up from his seat leaving his food unfinished and stormed into his room.
One thing was pretty sure after this conversation that Nirav's father was totally against this decision of Nirav and won't support him in his decision.
Nirav was in his room, sitting on the bed, deep into thoughts. Asha came and sat beside him. No one spoke for a few seconds.
"You know Nirav, I am neither with you nor against you. I never had the guts to take decision for myself. When I see you and Anika taking decisions for your life which would make you happy, I wish I had those guts back then to stand up for myself and continue my job. I was so blindfolded till now with a thought that a woman's life should always be dedicated to her family only. And both of you proved me wrong. I can't exactly go against your father but I want you to grab this golden opportunity and seek your happiness.", Asha said in a calm tone.
Nirav looked up into her eyes which were now moist with tears. "Thank you so much mom, thank you so much for understanding."
Nirav was glad that his mother tried to understand him. All he could do was to hope that his dad would understand him too sooner or later.
