"Am I going to see you tonight?" I asked Joy. I hadn't seen her since she had returned from her trip. I knew she had her daughters and was busy with work, so I didn't pressure her about it either.

It was Friday afternoon, and I knew that they had plans to exchange the kids that night. I wasn't trying to be anxious, but I was anxious about seeing her. I hated that it was like that, but I was that into Joy.

"Yes, I already told you that you would see me," she said. Even though she was saying the right things, everything else seemed off. I didn't want to judge anything from a phone call, so I wanted to ask her about it in person.

"Aight, well let me finish with my workout so I can get out of here," I told her.

"Okay, I'll see you later," she sighed.

After I ended the call, I went back to lifting the weights. I had my music blasting in my headphones, so I didn't hear Claudia calling my name until she tapped me on the shoulder. I removed my headphones from my ears.

"What's up?" I asked her, glancing at her friend who I strangely recognized.

"I've been calling your name for a minute," Claudia joked. I pointed at my headphones. "What are you listening to?"

"Nas," I answered pausing my music.

"I didn't mean to interrupt your workout. I just wanted to let you know I was here," she said. "Oh, and this is my girl Vanessa Spencer. We went to high school together," she grinned.

"Where do I know you from?" Vanessa asked pointing a finger at me. I shrugged because I recognized her face but didn't know if it was from the gym or dancing. I reached out and shook her hand.

"I don't know, I guess I just have one of those faces," I said vaguely.

"No, I know you from somewhere, and it's going to hit me before I leave here," she said as if in deep thought about it.

"You staying much longer?" Claudia asked.

"I was just wrapping up. I had a few clients this afternoon and I wanted to get in a quick workout," I replied. "What about you?"

"I got the group class," she reminded me and then looked at her friend. "I made Vanessa come out because she's going through a break-up and I'm trying to make her get over that lying idiot."

"I told you it's complicated," Vanessa said rolling her eyes. "He's getting out of a bad situation and I'm trying to give him time to deal with it. I'm not going anywhere and neither is he."

"And all I just heard you say in my head, was that he was a hot mess. You don't have any baggage, why do you wanna wait around on somebody who has a whole truck full of it?" Claudia went on.

"I'm not having this conversation with you," Vanessa nodded at me.

"Phil, from a man's point a view, please tell this girl she needs to move on," Claudia directed at me. I was finding amusement from their argument. "He's obviously playing her."
