Euijin

The bell rang, and the teacher strode in with her small ponytail bouncing behind her. Ms. Naeyong looked young, but was fairly old. Somewhere between 30 and 35, but that was hard to tell for people around her given her cheerful and sweet personality. She barely scolds anyone, which was probably why this was the rowdiest class in the entire grade.

Ms. Naeyoung walked in with her usual sweet smile plastered to her face, but didn't take her seat behind her desk. She simply stood at the center and waved a hand, permitting the monitor to tell everybody to sit down.

"Kids, today we have a special guest among us." Her glass-thick voice rang out followed by hushed confused whispers of the class. Euijin was fairly sure of the who the special guest was, and she really wanted to get a good glimpse of his face. A boy good in studies was rarely to be found in her class, the only boy who was a perfect A student had long left before the start of third quarter. Excelling in studies alone was boring, having a competitor sounded fun.

In walked the boy, short for his age, but muscular. His face was tan, like he had just come from hours of playing under the sun, but his eyes were sparkling and clear. Like that of an artist. He had a timid smile on his face as he faced the class, his back straight and confident like standing in front of a big class with unknown kids eyeing him like a show piece was nothing to be scared of.

He glanced at Ms.Naeyoung, who gestured for him to speak. He faced the class again, and spoke out.

"Annyeonghaseyo, my name is Park Jimin. I hope I can study well with you guys." His forced smile was as sweet as his voice. He could be a great singer, Euijin thought.

"Well nice to meet you Jimin! It's so great to have a new student since anyone barely transfers here. Since we're doing an introduction, how about you introduce yourself further? You can talk about your hobbies, your interests, your crush,"- all the girls went all ears at that, since Jimin was handsome,- "anything you want to talk about so that we can get to know you better."

"Umm.." He shifted his feet, and then stilled, "I like music and dancing."

"That's it?" A boy asked.

"What about your crush? Do you have a girlfriend?" Euijin didn't need to look to see who had asked that question. It was Lee Nari, the prettiest girl in their class, second ranked in grade beauty, and somebody who had a keen eye for handsome guys. She was always dating and breaking up, heck Euijin heard from the cafeteria lady that Nari had just broken up with the school football team's captain three days after they started dating. Looks like Jimin is her new hunt now.

Jimin looked at her once, then dropped his gaze. Stunned by her beauty? Euijin bit back a retort. "No, I don't have one."

She heard all the girls squeak in excitement. Looks like Nari wasn't the only one planning to hunt him.

Ms. Naeyoung looked at the round clock on the wall, and declared that there were five minutes left till the next class,- which was maths. Five minutes was too long to wait for, so Euijin had her head down while Ms. Naeyoung began to show Jimin his seat.

"Okay Jimin you'll sit beside Jinyoung,-"

"Ms. Naeyoung if it's not too much trouble, can I please sit next to that long haired girl at the last bench near the window?"

Euijin's head went up in shock. She was even more startled to find his eyes fixed on hers. She kept her gaze fixed momentarily, before breaking it to look around her. The whole class was gawking, and Nari's ears had gone red. Oh, this meant trouble.

Ms. Naeyoung nodded in response, and Jimin made his way past all the tables and sat down next to the chair beside her. She didn't dare look him in the eye because she knew that would serve as a cause to initiate a conversation. Instead, she kept her eyes on the table. There was a ruffle of chairs, and she smelled a sharp odor of what smelled like a mixture of metal and apricots. She made the mistake of turning her head to see if anybody was actually eating apricots or not and found him looking at her. They both dropped her eyes in a moment of pure awkwardness.

Mathematics class began as the teacher strolled into the room and began explaining the day before's homework. As expected, Jimin was paying his full attention. He was even taking notes, something she hadn't seen in ages. It startle her enough to make her gasp. And served as a cause for another moment of awkwardness when he had looked at her.

She leaned down on the table, her hair barricading the rest of the world from her view as she focused on the algebra problems in front of her. She got the the first four right, but she seemed to be struggling with the last one. She re-checked all the steps but the answer didn't match from the answer key in the textbook. She erased her workings and began again, and ended up with the same result. She lifted her head up in frustration, and gripped her pencil hard trying to figure out what was wrong.

"Umm.. I can help?" She turned her head in surprise to find Jimin looking at her. She was too stupid to respond which he probably took negatively, since he bowed his head slightly in a apologetic manner and was about to look away but Euijin stopped him.

"No no, don't apologize I honestly don't mind. And yes, please do help me I'm stuck with this problem." She wriggled her hands in her front of her, a thing she did when she was nervous.

He smiled at her and gently took the copy from under her elbows and began to work out the sum before explaining it to her. He dragged his chair closer to hers, and she only realized how close they were sitting when their shoulders touched. Although it was a slight movement, she knew it would mean as a "she likes him" sign to everybody else, so a little flustered she drew her chair a little sideways. Jimin didn't seem to notice it, just went on with his smooth explanation. When he was done, and she had applied his method for solving the problem and had gotten the correct answer, he had smiled so sweetly at her that she had felt her whole body shudder.

"Well, that's how you do it, umm..." He looked at her with a questioning look on his face.

"Oh, uh my name is Hong Euijin." She slightly bowed her head causing her bangs to fall over her eyes. She quickly pushed them away and offered him a nervous smile which probably others would mistake as a radiant smile given her smiley eyes.

"Nice to meet you, Euijin-ah. I hope we can be friends." His radiant smile made her speechless, so she nodded.

Who would have thought, where this friendship would end up one day?
