A cool Summer breeze blew into the tiny bedroom through the opened window. It was a nice change from the humid hot days that they had recently been having. A young girl, four months away from turning fourteen, sat on her bed looking through her textbook. She was becoming acquainted with the material she would be learning in the upcoming school year.
Most children wouldn't buy their school supplies so far in advance, much less read it! But this was not a textbook for any ordinary class, this was a Transfiguration textbook. A class that is taught at Hogwarts School of Witch Craft & Wizardry. Jamie Black could barely contain her excitement about returning to school. She had spent her whole Summer working any job she could get and save her money for school supplies. She even had enough left over to get her robes hemmed and repaired so they would last her another year.
Jamie jumped at the sound of the front door slamming shut. She shut her book and grabbed her other school supplies. She moved her trunk, pulled up the loose floorboard and shoved everything into the hole. She had just moved the trunk back in its place as the footsteps reached her door.
The door was shoved opened and Jamie jumped to her feet. Dark brown eyes belonging to the man in the doorway surveyed the room.
"What are you doing?" Orion Ward demanded.
"Nothing, sir," Jamie squeaked. She hated how all her courage disappeared the second he was facing her. Orion stepped into the room and leaned down, so he was level with her. Jamie held her breath.
The was a loud crack as Orion's slapped Jamie. She fell back and landed on her bed.
"Stupid bitch, you should know better than to lie to me," Orion growled at her. "We're you doing magic? Practicing your silly spells again? Maybe I should break that stick of yours, then you won't be able to disobey me." Orion began rummaging through the draws in her dresser, throwing Jamie's clothes on the floor. When he didn't find the wand there he began looking through the trunk. "Where is it!" He shouted shoving the trunk aside. That's when he saw it. The floorboard with a corner that was sticking up. He pulled it up and saw all the textbooks and school supplies, but no wand.
Jamie felt like she couldn't breathe as she watched Orion pick up one of the books and flip it open.
"How did you afford these things?" He muttered, his eyes scanning one of the pages. "You stole, didn't you! You stole them! You stole money from me!" Orion shouted. He grabbed the corner of the page with his fingers and tore it out.
"No!" Jamie cried jumping for the book, but Orion pushed her back. Orion continued to rip out pages.
"Now you might think before breaking the rules!"
"But I didn't! I wasn't practicing magic!"
"Liar!" Orion roared as he threw the book to the floor. He reached into the hole and brought out another book and repeated his actions.
Jamie let out a sob as she watched her beloved books be destroyed.
"Jamie!"
Jamie and Orion froze at the sound of another voice in the apartment.
"Who's here!" Orion shouted as he tossed the torn-up book aside and made his way over to the bedroom door. "Who dares to come into my home without my- "Orion let out a choking sound as someone held a wand against his throat. Jamie could not see their face because they were in the hallway.
"Where is she!" The man growled.
Jamie's eyes widened, as she listened to the stranger's voice. It couldn't be. Jamie walked towards the door. "...Dad?"
