Chapter 2: Love and Science

Sam

I'm not going to lie, I'm fucking nervous. I've been trying to keep it together for Lia's sake, but I'm worried about how she's going to handle it if things don't work out. There's just so much planning we can do. The rest is really up to science.

I hear the bell right as I turn into the staff parking lot that afternoon, so I figure it won't be too long before she comes out. Just to make sure, I send her a text to tell her I'm here.

A few minutes pass and I finally spot her walking quickly toward my truck. She puts her things in the backseat and hops up next to me in the front.

"Hi beautiful," I grin, turning the music down.

"Hi yourself," she smiles and leans in to kiss me.

I pull out of the parking lot and make my way back onto the highway. We grab coffee from Dunkin' Donuts on our way out of town while she tells me about her day and I tell her about mine. We don't talk about the fertility clinic, at least not until we reach the city and she puts the address into my GPS.

"This is really happening," she says excitedly, practically bouncing in her seat. "Can you imagine? I might actually be pregnant by the end of the summer!"

"I know," I reply soberly. I'm not the kind of guy to get my hopes up, especially when there are so many variables to take into consideration. I really don't want to spoil her mood though, so I smile along with her.

If you blink it's easy to miss the clinic. It's in an old brick building attached to two other businesses, so we almost drive right by. Lia's the one that catches the green and blue sign above the glass door and screeches out for me to make a left.

At least it's not difficult to find a parking spot. There's hardly anybody here.

"They could use some landscaping," Lia points out as we make our way hand-in-hand across the parking lot, up the curb and through the door.

The interior isn't much to look at either. The carpet looks old and faded. The wallpaper is out of date. There aren't a lot of chairs in the waiting area, but I'm guessing they don't get too much need for them anyway because we're the only two clients here. In fact, even the receptionist is nowhere to be seen when we walk up to the desk.

"Excuse me," I say loudly. Very quickly a middle-aged woman peers out from an opening in the back and smiles at us. "Sorry, we're a little early. We've got an appointment at 4:30."

Lia lets go of my hand and takes a step forward to lean against the desk. "Under Amelia Willems... We've been talking to Dr. Cho on the phone?" she says, glancing at me. I nod.

From there, before we can even see the doctor, we're handed a lot of paperwork to fill out. It's mostly boring stuff like health histories and insurance information. We've already gone through a lot of the red tape at this point, so it shouldn't be too tedious from here. Lia already had blood work done and her regular OB did a sonogram to make sure all of her parts are in good working order (her words, not mine).

Now it's a waiting game.

Considering the place is dead, we have to sit a long ass time before Lia's name gets called. So I entertain myself by playing a game on my phone and Lia checks her Instagram. It's a quarter to five when we get told to follow through a set of doors, down a hallway and into one of the small exam rooms.

This isn't Dr. Cho. The doctor asking us to take a seat is a blonde woman in her forties that introduces herself as Dr. Blaine. She looks over our papers and gives us some information we already know about. She asks a few questions, like our marital status, Lia's age and some details about her cycle.
