When the 4th rolled around Hannah's friends fangirled for a few minutes before acting normally around Niall. We went to a parade and had barbecue for dinner, which Niall thoroughly enjoyed. He was absolutely delighted with the fireworks. Hannah offered to show him the treehouse in the backyard, swearing that it was the best place to see the fireworks from.

As they climbed up the ladder I snuck to the base of the tree with Nicole and Anna in tow. "I'm going up. I'll report back in five," I whispered. I climbed just high enough so that I could see into the tree house, where Niall and Hannah were lying down, looking out the window.

"So pretty," Niall murmured.

"I know! I love fireworks!" Hannah agreed.

"I was talking about you," he said, smiling at her.

Hannah blushed, something I hadn't seen in a long time. "I bet you think you're pretty smooth," she challenged.

Niall looked surprised. "Not at all. I'm not usually very good around beautiful girls. But I feel like I can be myself around you. That's how I was with Gemma too. I think that's why we've gotten so close."

"So you think I'm best friend material?" Hannah asked, waggling her eyebrows.

Niall rolled to look at her and she stared back at him. "Not exactly." Before she could reply Niall closed the gap between them and pressed his lips against hers.

I fought back a squeal and  climbed down the ladder.

"What's going on?" Nicole demanded.

"What are they doing?" Anna pressed.

"He kissed her!" I squeaked, and the three of us jumped up and down like little girls. I calmed down before them, and they exchanged looks, still hopping. "Calm down girls. He is just a boy."

"Are you crazy?" Anna shrieked.

"He's Niall Horan! He's not just some boy!" Nicole agreed.

"And he can hear you!" Niall called from the treehouse.

They blushed and ran away giggling. I went up the ladder again and settled myself next to Niall. "Do not hurt my sister," I threatened seriously.

"Oh calm down Gemma it was just a kiss," Hannah laughed. "We're not dating or anything."

I could have sworn Niall muttered something along the lines of "but we could be", but he wasn't loud enough for me to understand it clearly. "Come get some cake with me!" I suggested to relieve the tension that was starting to build.

"Cake!" Niall cheered.

I led the way to the door and towards the ladder. As I stepped onto the first rung I felt my foot slip and the last thing I could remember was crashing towards the ground and Niall and Hannah's yells.

"Babe, are you awake?" Niall's voice was gently and close to my ear.

I rubbed my eyes, blinking against the harsh hospital light. "What happened."

"You fell from the treehouse. You were knocked out so we drove you straight to the hospital," Hannah said from beside me. "The doctors said you have a pretty serious concussion."

"Speaking of which, looks like one of them wants to talk to you," Niall added, glancing at the door.

"I'm going to run to the vending machine. Do you want anything?" Hannah asked.

"Want me to go with?" Niall asked as I shook my head.

"It's ok. Stay with Gemma. I'll be back in five minutes." She exited the room with one last smile in my direction.

"Hello Ms. Carlisle. I'm Dr. Michaels, I'm the one who's taking care of you," the doctor informed me, taking Hannah's now empty seat.

"Please, call me Gemma," I replied.

"How are you feeling, Gemma," he as

"My head hurts," I admitted.

"That's normal," he assured me. "I wonder if we should talk alone for a moment."

Niall stood up to leave, but I held his hand firmly in mine. "it's ok. Whatever it is, you can say it in front of Niall."

"Is this your boyfriend?" He asked.

"No. But he's my best friend." I looked at Niall who smiled at me. "Go ahead."

"When you were checked in we took a blood sample. Stand procedure in case you wind up needing an infusion for some reason," the doctor began.

"Is something wrong? Is she sick?" Niall asked, his voice growing panicked.

"No. She's perfectly healthy," the doctor said quickly.

"So what's the issue?" I pressed, my own pulse growing quicker by the second. "Niall, will you hand me that water?"

Niall handed me the water and I took a sip just as the doctor continued with, "Gemma, you're three weeks pregnant."

I spat the water all over Niall who looked like he was about to feint. "I'm sorry, Nialler!" I said quickly.

"It's ok, darling," he answered. "She's pregnant? Are you absolutely certain."

Dr. Michaels nodded. "Without a doubt. I take it this a surprise to you."

I nodded, squeezing Niall's hand tightly. "I'm on birth control."

"Are you certain you didn't miss a day? Even skipping one pill drastically lowers the effectiveness."

I thought carefully, but all my pills were taken. I would have noticed if one was still in the packet. "I was even good about taking them at the same time each day too."

"Did you switch timezones?" Dr. Michaels asked.

"I went to England," I whispered. "I didn't think about how the time switch would affect it. I just took it at the same time i always do."

"That's probably what caused it to fail," he replied gently.

"She's pregnant," Niall repeated dumbly. "Oh my god. Oh my god."

"I'll leave you two to talk. Gemma, we're going to have to keep you overnight for observation about the concussion, but you should be free to go in the morning," Dr. Michaels said, standing up. He shook my hand then Niall's before exiting the room.

"Gemma, what are you going to do? You're only twenty years old."

"I know." I yanked the sheet down and pulled my shirt up to study my stomach. It was the same flat shape it had been for the past four years. "Niall, you can't tell Zayn!"

"WHAT?" He yelled. "Gemma, that's his baby in there. You have to tell him!"

"I will," I promised. "But I have to be the one to do it, and I'm going to do it in person. I don't want to ruin his time with his family. I'll tell him when he gets here on Friday."

"Gemma, you shouldn't hide this from him," Niall huffed. "You should tell him right away. And you don't have until Friday. I texted him on the way to the hospital and he said he was getting on the next flight. He should be here in a few hours."

"What?" I screeched. "Niall, how do I tell him about this? This will destroy everything he's ever worked for."

"That's not true," he protested. "Musicians have kids all the time."

"Kid!" I wailed. The tears came bursting from my eyes and Niall crawled into the bed with me so he could hold me. I buried my face in his chest and just sobbed, unable to hold it back anymore. "Niall, I'm fucking pregnant."
