Today is adoption day. Miss Paisley said that today was going to be extra special because we're gonna have someone really special come to the orphanage. I don't know why but the girls were excited. I don't know who's coming but one of the big kids said she's a singer.
I was downstairs in the living room with Ashlee, we were coloring in a town together. Miss Paisley made me wear overalls with a pink shirt that had flowers on it. And she tied my hair up, which I really hate. It not comfy. I pull the hair tie off and my hair goes down. My hair was short, reaching over my shoulders.
"You gon' be in trouble." Ashlee lisped out and I shrugged, coloring in the bridge.
"Awww, you are adorable." A man crouched in front of us. He was facing Ashlee so I scooted away from her. "What's your name sweetie?"
"Ashlee." She said and I got up. I gave her a tiny smile and headed towards the couch. I climbed onto it and laid my head on the armrest. I watched the adults walk past me and go to the other kids. I sighed and closed my eyes, deciding to take a nap.
But before I could even sleep, I hear a voice.
"Hi, what's your name sweetheart?" I opened my eyes a bit and looked at the woman in front of me. She was really pretty. She had a lot of drawings on her, I think Bridget called them tattoos. She had short black hair and brown eyes. She wore black glasses and she had a nice smile.
"Milani." I cringed as I said it and she smiled, tucking a strand behind my ear.
"That is such a pretty name." She said and I shrugged. "My name is Demi." I nodded, "What do you like to do Milani?" I cringed a bit and thought about it.
"I like playing with my dinosaur." I mumbled and she seemed to hear it because she smiled.
"Dinosaurs huh? I love dinosaurs." She said and I smiled a bit. "I like dogs more though." She giggled and I nodded excitedly. I always wanted a doggy. "What else do you like to play with?"
"Ummm....Miss P says I can't tell." I said biting my lip. She furrowed her eyebrows.
"Why not?" She asked.
"'Cause it's bad." I shrugged.
"Can you still tell me? I won't be mean about it." She said and I shrugged. Why not? It's nutlike she's going to adopt me.
"I like playing with trains an' trucks. But I no' allowed 'cau-cause I a girl. I only allowed to color." I said and shrugged. Demi looked at me and then turned her head to Miss Paisley, frowning. She turned back to me and let out a smile.
"How old are you Milani?" She asked.
"Four n half." I answered.
"How long have you been in this orphanage?" She asked.
"I was a baby." I said and she nodded.
"What's your favorite color?" She asked and I looked around the room before pointing at a chair. "Blue huh? Do you know all your colors?" I nodded proudly. "Is that so? Can you list them?"
"Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple!" I said and she clapped at me, smiling wide.
"That was so good baby!" She gave me a high five and I giggled.
We spent an hour playing and asking questions. I really like Demi, she's super nice. Right now, I was sitting on her lap and she was telling me a story about a Dinosaur that learned how to fly. Halfway through, I was falling asleep. I was really tired from waking up early and I needed a nap.
Without even realizing it, I fell asleep on Demi.
"-and that's how Fred the Dino learned how to fly." I looked down at Milani and found the little booger fast asleep on me. She was clutching onto my shirt and I couldn't help but awe at the sight. She was truly adorable.
"Oh Miss Lovato, I hope Milani isn't causing any trouble." Miss Paisley appeared, I shook my head at her.
"No, not at all." I said while stroking Milani's head. She relaxed in her sleep and I looked at Miss Paisley. "Is anyone looking to adopt Milani?" The older woman shook her head.
"Not really, but Milani has always been a quiet and obedient child." She said and I had an off feeling about her.
"Well, I'd like to adopt Milani." I nodded, knowing this was my final decision.
"Certainly Miss Lovato, I'll get the paperwork ready tomorrow morning." She said.
"And why not now?" I asked. I was really eager to take her home now.
"Well, if you're sure you won't change your mind." She said and I nodded fast.
"I really want to take her home, so can you get the paperwork ready to be signed?" I asked and she nodded.
"Can you wake her to tell her to pack?" She asked and I nodded, watching her walk off.
I looked back down at Milani and stroked her cheek. I really hate people who raise kids saying what they can and can not do just because of gender norms. I will let Milani do what she likes and play with whatever she wants because this is a new age. She can be whatever she wants to be and I'll be right here to support her in any way I can.
a/n: soo? Like do you like it? Are you digging it? Are you wondering who even says digging it anymore? Well, I do. So like, comment below, please? Cause I'm super nervous from coming back pretty please
