18 Minutes (STAWP Chapter 46)
"Come sit?" I suggest, gesturing at the spot on the bed next to me. This is a moment we'll both remember for the rest of our lives, and I want to get it right.
Saf hesitates for a few seconds and then crosses the room to sit next to me. She leaves an elephant of a space between us, so that even if I reached my arm out, I wouldn't be able to touch her.
It's not exactly what I was going for, and my wolf urges me to move closer. I long to reach out and pull her close, but I don't want to make her uncomfortable or rush things. Not now when what I have to tell her is so important. I settle on just watching her, taking in how gorgeous she looks in the silk purple dress, with her arms and legs bared to my gaze. Her eyes are bright as she looks at me and her hair falls in soft waves down her bare shoulders. I long to caress one of the strands, and when Saf touches it absently—as if reading my mind—my wolf howls with need. He urges me to grab her, to pin her down on the bed and climb on top of her and... I jump to my feet.
"What?" Saf asks in surprise.
"Father's going to make the announcement soon." I force myself to move halfway across the room so I don't grab her and let out a frustrated growl. When there's finally a huge chunk of space between us, I grip my hands tightly behind my back to help me resist the temptation my mate poses. I'm pretty sure if I so much as kissed her now, I'd never be able to stop, and we do not have time to start anything right now. Later—as soon as Father tells the pack that we're mates—we can be together. We can lock ourselves in our room and take our time. We can do everything I've been wanting to do with my mate since I first met her and saw her in those baggy clothes.
"What announcement?" Saf asks, interrupting my train of thought. Which reminds me that I haven't even told her the amazing news.
"Well," I grin, pausing for a moment as anticipation flows through me, "now that you can link and you've proved you're not an Omega—"
"Wait," Saf jumps to her feet, her eyes wide with excitement. "I can link?"
"Yeah." I frown. "You don't remember?"
"No." She frowns too, but then suddenly grins like a kid in a candy store. "Can we try it?"
Her excitement is so contagious that I grin back. Of course, I reply over the link, waiting for her reaction. I've linked with pack members since I first shifted, so it shouldn't be a big deal, and yet my stomach flutters at the thought of linking with my mate. Of seeing her joy when she hears my voice in her head, and feeling the same when I hear her voice in mine.
"Hello?" Saf waves her hand up in front of my face, startling me. "Can we try it? Please, Logan?"
"Not again." I groan. Why can't she hear me? She linked before! I don't want to go through this all over again. We're past this!
