Chapter 6:
“Wait…” I say again as she stops right in her tracks, back still facing me.
“Can we talk?” I ask again when she stays silent. “Please?”
I hear her let out a sigh as she turns around, making my heart stop. Even when she was soaked in ice water, she still looked stunning. Her eyes travel to our still connected hands and I pull away quickly. I could feel my face heat up as I stepped back, looking down to try and hide it.
“What do you want?” she asks her voice coarse as her eyes met mine. I shivered under the intensity of her gaze. But amidst the intimidating look, I ended up smiling softly. It was like déjà vu. The scenario just reminded me of the time we first met…when Grant and the rest of my friends had bullied her.
But of course, this encounter will have a different and hopefully pleasant result.
“Well?” Elena speaks, hands on her hip as frustration flashed through her eyes. “You wanted to talk?”
“I’m sorry,” I blurt out quickly, deciding to go with what my gut wants to say.
And that seemed to catch her off guard. Her body jumped back a few feet as her eyes widened to the size of dinner plates.
“For…for what?” she asks, voice quivering. If it was from the cold or something else, I had no idea.
“Just everything,” I sigh deeply, running a hand through my hair where frost had already started to form. Soon enough my hair would probably freeze into long, pointy spikes. Perfect weapon…I guess. “For making you go, or even want to go, down this route and try and kill yourself. For my friends who bullied you and…”
“Yeah, I’d like to hear that from them,” she said, eyes turning back to that cold, lifeless expression. Her arms cross in front of her chest, tightening around herself as a gust of wind chilled both of us. But my health wasn’t my main concern. What caught my eye was the tip of Elena’s fingers as she crossed her arms.
Panic struck me. I quickly cross the distance again, grabbing her hand. I hardly hear a gasp as I examined the blue areas. Dread coursed through my body as my silent conclusions had been true. Hypothermia was setting in.
“Let’s go,” I start walking, planning to drag her with me, only to be pulled back.
Damn she’s strong.
“Hell no, I’m not going anywhere with you,” she simply states. Little does she know though that her statement created yet another tear in my heart. It’s obvious why she doesn’t trust me but still to know that she doesn’t hurt…a lot.
“Please,” I say, my voice close to the point of begging.
“Why should I?”
“Your fingers,” I start out as her attention turns towards her hand, “the dark blue, hypothermia is setting in and if we don’t warm you up, you might lose feeling in your hands or possibly” I gulp, “die,”
Elena looks back up at me, one eyebrow raised. Her expression looked confused, puzzled at my statements.
“I took health last year,” I answer the question her expression exhibited meekly.
“Took?” she says, a hint of amusement on her face. “You mean, you actually went to class last year?”
I felt a blush come again, staining the paleness of my face a bright, bright red. This girl can really make my hormones go this haywire. It’s something not even Justin was capable of doing. It was something new for me. “You caught me,” I say, smiling lightly causing her to chuckle a little. The air seems to lighten up a little as my stomach drops as I continue to hear the sweet laughter, watch that dazzling smile cross her face.
